Rescuers bring home 23 skiers and snowboarders lost in Vermont’s backcountry
KILLINGTON, Vermont — Nearly two dozen skiers and snowboarders, several of them juveniles, were rescued Saturday after they got lost in the state’s backcountry.
A news release from the Killington Police Department says dispatchers were called at 2:30 p.m. and initially told that seven to nine skiers and snowboarders were lost. However, police and rescuers with the Vermont State Police’s Search and Rescue team soon found out that 21 people were lost.
The Killington Police Search and Rescue team also was called in and rescuers “hiked, snowshoed and skinned” about five miles “in frigid temperatures” to find the missing people and bring them back to safety.
After bringing back the initial group, rescuers learned there were two more skiers reportedly lost. Six KSAR rescuers hiked back out into the backcountry and found the skiers, leading them back to safety at about 7:30 p.m.
There were no reports of injuries.

Vermont State Police are investigating a suspicious death in the eastern part of the state.
The investigation began around 10 a.m. Saturday when police received a report of a dead woman at a property at 48 Douglas Hill Road in Norwich. First responders located a woman dead inside the residence.
State police said their initial investigation indicates the woman’s death occurred under “potentially suspicious circumstances.” Everyone associated with the matter is accounted for, and they said there is no danger to the public.
The victim’s body will be brought to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington for an autopsy to determine cause and manner of death. State police said they will release the woman’s identity following further investigation and notification of family members.
