EXCLUSIVE: A former CIA officer weighed in on the pros and cons of former “Beverly Hills 90210” star Ian Ziering taking matters into his own hands when a group of people riding mini-motorized bikes swarmed his car on Hollywood Boulevard.

Video of last week’s incident shows Ziering stepping out of his car and shoving one of the bikers, before the scene devolved into a brawl. TMZ obtained video of the incident. Ziering, whose 12-year-old daughter was also in the car, explained his actions on Instagram.

“I experienced an alarming incident involving a group of individuals on mini bikes,” Ziering said. “While stuck in traffic, my car was approached aggressively by one of these riders leading to an unsettling confrontation. In an attempt to assess any damage I exited my car. This action, unfortunately, escalated into a physical altercation, which I navigated to protect myself.”

Ziering said he and his daughter were both left “completely unscathed” following the scary encounter.

Jason Hanson, a former CIA officer, started with what he said Ziering did “right.”

“He gets out of the car, the guy scratches his car or hits it or whatever, you know, happens, and they start punching him, right?” Hanson told Fox News Digital on Monday. “He’s outmanned, I think it was 3-to-1. So, you could tell he had no real fighting experience. However, what he did right was – one of the things I always tell people when I train them, is remember the words, ‘movement saves lives.’” 

“So it doesn’t matter if I’m teaching an evasive driving class, it doesn’t matter if I’m teaching a self-defense class, is if you just stand there, you’re going to get pummeled to death,” Hanson continued. “If you just sit there in the car, you’re going to get carjacked. So you’ve got to move out of that danger zone. So the fact that you saw him pushing his way out, he was running across the street. He was trying to run away from those guys. That was the thing he did good is he didn’t stand there and just let three, you know, people who are probably half his age, try and just punch the heck out of them. So he did a good job of moving and getting off the X.”

However, Hanson suggested that in most cases, staying safely inside one’s vehicle is the best option. Far too many people, he said, let their “ego” get the best of them.

“One of the hardest things is and again, it’s it’s hard for me to because I, I’m very well-trained, I’m very confident in my abilities,” he said. “But if somebody flips me the bird, I just let it go. I swallow my pride. It’s not worth getting in a road rage incident kind of thing. So if somebody you know is in front of your car or marks your car or whatever, you are in a vehicle which is several thousand pounds, you can go forwards, backwards, left or right, like you’re in a safe spot. As soon as you get out, that’s when the bad things happen.

“So, I 100% understand that every human being has an ego. Every human being is like, ‘Hey, you just scratched my car. I want to, I want to punch that guy.’ But you’ve got to let that stuff go. And that’s the tough part, because even me, why would I get out and have to fight 3-on-1 when I’m in this, this metal box, which is thousands of pounds and is a lot more dangerous, and is a lot more protective to me.”

Hanson is also the New York Times bestselling author of “Spy Secrets That Can Save Your Life,” and currently operates Spy Escape & Evasion, which provides lifesaving strategies and techniques to civilians and is run by Hanson and other former CIA and special operations personnel. The course is so enticing that it earned him a deal on “Shark Tank” in 2014.

In his Instagram post following the incident, Ziering said it proved the need for increased law enforcement.

“This situation highlights a larger issue of hooliganism on our streets and the need for effective law enforcement responses to such behavior,” he said. “As a citizen and a parent, I find it unacceptable that groups can freely engage in this kind of behavior, causing fear and chaos, while the response from authorities seems insufficient.”

And plenty of former California residents have said crime is what urged them to leave the state.

Hanson said his trainings are “100% needed more than ever” because he sees a violent society that offers “no consequences for doing bad things.”

Daniel Lurie sparked confrontation that injured security team: Police report


Mayor Daniel Lurie sparked the altercation that led to a fight and injuries to two San Francisco police officers in his security detail, according to a police report of the incident obtained by the Standard.

On Thursday evening at 5:38 p.m., Lurie, an aide, and two members of his security team were driving north on Larkin St. when they spotted several people sitting on the sidewalk on the corner of Cedar St., an alley in the Tenderloin. 

The mayor ordered the driver of his Rivian SUV, Officer Nicholas Boccio, to pull over. Lurie hopped out of the SUV. His second bodyguard, Officer Joel Aguayo, followed.

What happened next would result in two injured officers, a gun aimed at a man’s chest, two arrests, and renewed questions about the public safety under the mayor’s leadership.

While footage of the incident after the officer pushed one of the men has been published by Mission Local (opens in new tab), details about what led up to the fight have not been previously revealed. 

After leaving the safety of his vehicle, the mayor took matters into his own hands, the report says. Lurie attempted to get the group hanging out on Cedar St. to move, but one of the men refused. 

“On whose behalf do I need to move?” asked one of the men named Tony Phillips, according to Aguayo’s statement.

According to the narrative of the combined witness statements, “Mayor Lurie addressed the group and requested that they move along, as they were standing in the roadway. Phillips became immediately argumentative, stating that he did not have to move.”

Lurie told Phillips that Aguayo was an SFPD officer. Aguayo repeated that and requested that Phillips comply and move out of the way. Phillips again refused.

The police report said the mayor and Aguayo asked Phillips to move at least four times, at one point saying they would call uniformed officers to remove him. 

Still, Phillips refused, as the mayor paced a few feet away from Aguayo, video of the incident shows. 

While most of the group of four men appeared to stay put, according to footage of the incident, Phillips stepped toward Aguayo, who was standing in front of the mayor. 

According to the police report, Phillips then said, “I’ll Bruce Lee kick your ass.” Aguayo then swiftly pushed Phillips to the ground. Phillips got up and was pushed again before rushing the officer. The pair grappled and then fell to the ground, and Aguayo struck the back of his head.

During the fight, Lurie ran to the parked SUV to tell the driver, Boccio, that his partner was in trouble. When Boccio rushed to help, another man in the alley — Abraham Simon — grabbed the officer and reached for his waistband. Simon backed off after Boccio pulled his service weapon. 

Boccio then helped Aguayo but was unable to restrain Phillips. It wasn’t until several uniformed officers arrived that Phillips was taken into custody. 

Aguayo, who suffered cuts to the back of his head, facial bruising, and a back injury, said to investigating officers that he had to use force on Phillips because he was threatened verbally and got within inches of him. The officer also said he tried to de-escalate to no avail. Boccio’s hand was cut during the confrontation. 

No body camera footage was captured of the incident because officers in the mayor’s security detail did not wear them.

The incident, about which Lurie has made brief statements, has raised questions about whether Lurie’s freewheeling approach to walking the streets could put him into danger. The mayor told reporters last week after the incident that he asked the people to move because he was concerned for their safety and that of other pedestrians and drivers. 

“I’m out here walking the streets of San Francisco like I do every day. I believe that you can’t solve what you can’t see,” Lurie said in an Instagram post Monday, seemingly doubling down on his approach to interacting with San Franciscans. 

When asked for comment, the mayor’s spokesman Charles Lutvak referred to the Instagram post and a story Lurie shared in his State of the City speech about approaching a man who appeared to be an addict, who told the mayor to mind his own business. 

The mayor’s reply: “You are my business.”

Lurie’s own account of the incident was not included in the police report, although the document says he later would be contacted for a statement. 

Phillips is set to be arraigned Tuesday on charges of threatening an officer, inflicting great bodily injury, and contempt of court for violating a stay-away order from the alley. District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said her office will request that Phillips remain in custody as he is a threat to the public. 

Simon is also set to be arraigned Tuesday on charges of interfering with an officer. 

The incident is also being investigated by the Department of Police Accountability, according to The Chronicle.

With so many new apartments hitting the market in recent years, landlords across metro Denver are in an incentives arms race to attract new tenants. A month or two of free rent is almost a given, with more buildings offering three to four months. Fees are being discounted or eliminated, and gift cards for new tenants moving in are a common perk.

But the akin Golden Triangle, a newer 98-unit luxury apartment development at 955 Bannock St. in Denver, has pushed concessions to another level. In a sweepstakes, it recently awarded one tenant a $50,000 cash grand prize and the runner-up a year of free rent.

“We wanted to try something new. What we found, more than we thought we would, is that the sweepstakes brought the residents in these buildings together as a community. Management and staff got to know them,” said Rhys Duggan, president and CEO of Revesco Properties, which developed the building in partnership with Alpine Investments.

Duggan said the Revesco team initially considered providing a $100,000 grand prize, but talked themselves down. The sweepstakes, which started in late October, attracted 364 entries. Compared to heading up to Black Hawk or buying a lotto ticket, the odds of winning were much higher, with no money out of pocket required to enter.

Resident Claire Scobee, winner of the $50,000 grand prize, said she planned to save most of the money — after splurging on a shopping spree with her niece, according to a news release by Revesco.

“Winning was a complete surprise and feels like a once-in-a-lifetime blessing,” Scobee said. “I’m most excited to treat my family, especially my niece, and spend a fun day together making memories.”

The second prize winner, Lisa Cordova, said winning a year’s worth of free rent would allow her to focus on a project she has long wanted to do but couldn’t while working full-time.

“It gives me the momentum to finally follow through on a creative endeavor I’ve been wanting to do for a long time,” Cordova said.

Duggan said the Golden Triangle and River North submarkets have seen a lot of supply come online in a short amount of time, which has made it hard to fill up new apartment buildings.

Revesco Properties and Alpine Investments opened the doors on the akin Tennyson at 4560 N. Tennyson a few months before the akin Golden Triangle in early 2025. The akin Tennyson is nearly 90% full, while the akin Golden Triangle building is closer to 60% full, a reflection of how many new units went up in that neighborhood.

The Apartment Association of Metro Denver, which holds a quarterly media briefing to share the latest statistics, reports that concessions in the fourth quarter averaged 9.5% of total rent, which works out to four to five weeks of free rent. For new developments, free rent offers can average closer to three months.

SEATTLE — A Seattle woman’s nightmarish ambulance wait in the days before her death might have played out differently in another community, because U.S. cities have set up their 911 systems and nurse lines in various ways.

Many cities, like Seattle, have added 911 nurse lines in recent years to divert low-level patients away from crowded hospitals. But some have equipped their systems with more protections against extreme delays, like the 10 hours a woman named Pamela Hogan waited for a nurse-ordered ambulance in 2022.

It’s not clear that Hogan’s wait is what caused her death, but her estate is suing and her ordeal is raising questions about the city’s 911 medical system.

As Seattle leaders like new Mayor Katie Wilson deal with scrutiny over Hogan’s case and as additional communities consider adding 911 nurse lines, they may be able to learn from choices by policymakers elsewhere.

The Seattle Fire Department and its ambulance contractor, American Medical Response, say they’re generally guiding 911 patients to appropriate care. They declined to comment on Hogan’s case and a Seattle Times investigation.

But in Washington, D.C., as well as closer to home in Washington state and in other places, there are examples of more cautious approaches, say independent experts, including emergency response leaders and health care watchdogs.

“When we call our local Fire Department, we don’t expect to be passed off to a multibillion-dollar corporation without public oversight or transparency,” said Emily Brice, co-executive director of Northwest Health Law Advocates.

In Seattle

Seattle’s Nurse Navigation program went live in 2022 and is operated by the parent company of the city’s for-profit ambulance contractor, AMR.

When someone phones 911 with a low-level medical problem, Fire Department dispatchers can now route the call to a nurse. The nurse can try to resolve the problem with options like telemedicine or an Uber ride to a clinic.

Or the nurse can order an ambulance from the company’s dispatch office.

AMR was already providing ambulances for Seattle, but the nurse line was new. Before it launched, AMR was racking up financial penalties for violating the city’s contractual time standards, which said ambulances had to arrive within an hour.

Seattle and AMR officials promised the nurse line would relieve pressure on ambulance crews and thereby reduce delays to patients with more serious needs. They didn’t publicize some important details, however.

AMR’s nurses are located at a call center in Texas. They order ambulances for most patients they triage: more than 4,600 last year. And Seattle officials have excluded the nurse-ordered ambulances from the city’s time standards, giving the company more operational flexibility and shielding it from late penalties, experts say.

Patients like Hogan can’t update the nurse line directly as their conditions evolve, their AMR ambulances aren’t subject to contractual penalties for delays and the Fire Department doesn’t document how long the rides end up taking.

Those details and staffing issues may help explain why Hogan waited so long on a busy night, despite a nurse recommending she get care within four hours and despite Hogan calling 911 back multiple times, some experts said.

“If you don’t track it, you don’t know what’s happening,” added Cheryl Kauffman, who owns the health care consulting service Seattle Patient Advocates, describing the city’s setup as “a perfect recipe for poor outcomes.”

In other cities

Nurse lines and 911 systems vary from place to place. For example, Spokane uses AMR and exempts nurse-ordered ambulances from strict time limits, like Seattle does. But Vancouver, Wash., also uses AMR and doesn’t do that.

When the nurses order ambulances for Vancouver patients, the city’s time standards apply, the wait times are tracked and AMR can be penalized for delays, said Michelle Bresee, an emergency medical services analyst at the city.

“They’re still a person waiting for service and we want to make sure that person gets a response in a reasonable amount of time,” Bresee said.

Washington, D.C., also maintains ambulance wait standards and reporting, directing nurses to bounce patients back to 911 for ambulance dispatching.

“We want every call to have the same response standards,” said David Vitberg, the district’s Fire Department medical director and the lead editor of a textbook on emergency care and transportation. “There’s an inherent risk in not holding (ambulance) units to some sort of response time metric.”

D.C. requires AMR’s parent company to embed a nurse in the district’s 911 center, integrate its computer system with the district’s and check medical histories to help triage patients. Seattle’s contract lacks those guardrails.

In Fort Worth, Texas, the 911 agency maintained time standards for nurse-ordered ambulances and built its nurse line in-house to guard against potential communication gaps, said former administrator Matt Zavadsky, who set up that system. Seattle couldn’t afford to do that, the Fire Department said.

Fort Worth automatically upgraded its responses based on triggers like repeated callbacks or unexpected ambulance delays, sometimes routing a patient back to a nurse or sending a paramedic to check on them, said Zavadsky, now a nationally recognized consultant on emergency medical systems. Seattle’s system has no such automatic triggers, the Fire Department said.

There are other considerations, said Conrad Fivaz, medical director for Priority Solutions, another nurse-line vendor that operates internationally.

Priority Solutions only works with 911 agencies that employ nurses in-house, integrate their computer systems and are accredited by the International Academy of Emergency Dispatch, Fivaz said. Seattle doesn’t tick those boxes, he said.

Priority Solutions also only works with registered nurses, Fivaz added, whereas AMR has used less-qualified nurses for some patients. Josephine Ensign, professor emeritus at the University of Washington School of Nursing, said she believes nurses assigned to triage vulnerable 911 patients should hold Bachelor of Science degrees in nursing with training in public and community health.

“You have to put things in place to mitigate the risk,” Fivaz said.

What’s next

Ken Miller worked with AMR to launch a nurse line when he served as medical director for the 911 system in Santa Clara County, Calif.

His system agreed to a contract like Seattle’s, exempting nurse-ordered ambulances from time standards, said Miller, who’s since left the county.

But Miller was “never satisfied I had enough transparency,” he said, describing what happened to Hogan in Seattle as his “nightmare” scenario.

“This goes beyond Seattle,” as cities across the U.S. continue experimenting with nurse triage lines to reduce strain on 911 systems, said Miller, who has served on the National Emergency Medical Systems Advisory Council.

A nurse-ordered ambulance should at least be required to reach a patient within whatever period the patient’s nurse recommends, some experts said.

“If your own staff say the patient needs care within this time frame, you should provide that,” said Amber Sabbatini, an associate professor of emergency medicine at the University of Washington who researches health care systems.

Seattle just missed a potential opportunity to secure more accountability, because officials signed a new, five-year contract with AMR in September and chose to continue exempting nurse-ordered ambulances from oversight.

But with a new mayor, city attorney and two new City Council members, it’s possible Seattle leaders will revisit the matter.

Kevin Mackey, medical director for the Sacramento Fire Department, said Seattle’s 911 system enjoys a stellar reputation; its Medic One program broke ground decades ago by training firefighters as paramedics. Yet he agreed with other experts that Hogan’s case and Seattle’s guidelines are worthy of review.

“The public expectation should not and cannot be perfection,” Mackey said. “But it also should not and cannot be that people are going to die.”
