Comea Shelter preparing for Wyoming’s cold weather

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) – While Fall is just getting started, the cold temperatures will be here before you know it. The Comea Shelter will be in preparations for an influx of people.

While Wyoming winters are nothing new, there are changes coming to the shelter. In the past, the Comea shelter had offered a low barrier shelter, which allowed folks who couldn’t stay sober.

However, the shelter found that during the time of this program, people were using the shelter but were sober, so they were using the shelter to avoid the responsibilities that came to being involved in a program.

The shelter has put in new policies which must be met during instances of severe weather or extreme cold. According to Robin Bocanegra, Executive Director of the shelter, the temperatures must “get down where it gets really could and people shouldn’t be outside.” She also states that anyone who is sober will be allowed to stay while the cold weather policy is in place, whether they are in a program or not.

During severe weather, such as blizzards and extreme wind chill events, anyone can come in, even if you are not sober. However, folks that are not sober have to be manageable.
