A man wearing a hospital gown walked out of Fairfax Hospital on Monday night, while being treated and with an IV stuck in his arm, and stole an ambulance, Fairfax County police said.

The ambulance, a privately owned vehicle, was recovered, police said. But late Monday night, they said they were continuing to look for the man who took it.

The man had been a passenger in a vehicle that crashed Monday on Interstate 66, according to police. The crash occurred on Route 50 in the Fair Oaks area, they said.

Two firearms and possible narcotics were found in the crashed vehicle, and preliminary information indicated that it had been stolen, police said.

After the crash, police said, five occupants of the vehicle, all adults, were taken for hospital treatment. Two suffered life-threatening injuries, according to police.

In an account posted online, police said that after being taken to the hospital, one of the vehicle’s occupants, although not yet discharged, “walked away from treatment.”

“With an IV in (an) arm, (he) jumped in a private transport ambulance and stole it,” the account said.

The man was wearing a medical gown, police said.

Police did not identify the suspect by name.
