Durand School students dance the night away at prom in Washington Township

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (CBS) — Students danced the night away at the Durand School prom on Friday night.

“We have been talking about this event for weeks now,” Durand School Principal Jennifer Amoroso said.

The special night at The Supper Club in Washington Township was filled with sparkles and snazzy suits.

“We have quite a few dancers in here. We love to dance at Durand,” Amoroso said.

One of them was Hayden Rossi, who said a 90s boy band inspired his look for the night.

“I look like the one from the Backstreet Boys, ‘I Want It That Way,’” Rossi said.

Durand serves students with autism, learning and developmental disabilities. The students who attended the prom also got a full day of glam.

“We had haircuts. We had updos and then the students get to dress up and have that neurotypical event that they’re not used to having,” Amoroso said.

DJ Nick also had the whole room dancing and when it comes to song choice, he said he reads the room.

“Depends on the crowd,” DJ Nick said.

Elizabeth Utvik said there’s nothing like watching her daughter smile.

“It is like nothing that you can honestly imagine. Not only that she gets to have a prom, but also that I get to be here,” Utvik said.

“She got an updo in school, which she promptly took right out obviously. And the group home that my daughter lives in, they decorated it like you wouldn’t believe. They had a limo because they wanted a full prom experience,” Utvik said.

While the students danced the night away, it was also a night to remember for their families, teachers and staffers.

“It’s a whole family experience and they get to come out and they get to dance, they get to have amazing food and they get to have the best night ever. And look at the way they’re all dressed, they are having the best night of their lives,” said Rae Pastore, director of marketing and development.

Durand said this is their second prom and since it was such a success, they are planning to have it year after year.

Michigan State hockey star defenseman David Gucciardi has signed with the Washington Capitals

Michigan State senior defenseman David Gucciardi is heading to the NHL.

Gucciardi signed a two-year entry level contract with the Washington Capitals on Monday, joining a host of Spartans to ink deals with NHL clubs across the past few days.

Gucciardi appeared in 139 games for the Spartans over four seasons. He finished his career with career 17 goals and 28 assists.

Michigan State’s season came to an erupt ending last week when the Spartans were upset by Cornell in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Spartans won both the Big Ten regular season and tournament championships for a second straight year, but once again failed to reach the Frozen Four.

Washington State WBB Season Ends At North Dakota State in WNIT

The Washington State Cougars saw their run in the WNIT come to an end earlier this week with a 59-51 loss to North Dakote State in Fargo.

WSU again struggled from the floor, shooting 38.2% on the evening. The Cougs also committed 15 turnovers against the Bison, compared to just six by the opposition.

“We didn’t get quality shots in the first quarter. I don’t think we got quality shots in the fourth,” head coach Kamie Ethridge said postgame. “[NDSU was] very physical on our ball screen defense. We had some bad turnovers and then we missed a few really great looks. So, you know, they made them, they made some threes they made some deep catches in the paint and scored over us with some of their moves, and we kind of dried up in some of the shots that we got.”

Eleonora Villa and Alex Covill were WSU’s leading scorers with 14 points each.

Senior guard Tara Wallack also contributed four points with five blocks, three assists, and three rebounds. Wallack finishes her time in a WSU uniform as the first Cougar to reach over 4,000 minutes played, with 1,289 career points, 167 career blocks (second in program history), and 669 career rebounds.

WSU played this one without starting forward Dayana Mendes, who entered the transfer portal earlier this week after 12.4 points and 7.7 rebounds per game in her last ten contests.

“I know our team and program will be in great hands with the people that we have coming back,” Ethridge noted looking ahead to the 2025-2026 season.

Washington State’s 2024-2025 season ends with an overall record of 21-14 and conference record of 14-6 in their first season as members of the Pac-12 Conference.
