Barack Obama’s role in Joe Biden’s 2024 reelection bid takes shape

Former President Barack Obama’s developing role in President Joe Biden’s 2024 reelection effort was highlighted in a new tweet from Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff on Sunday.

“Do you want to meet Presidents @JoeBiden and @BarackObama?” he asked. “Chip in whatever you can to support Joe and Kamala’s campaign and you’ll be automatically entered for a chance a win.”

The tweet directed viewers to a landing page from ActBlue for the Biden Victory Fund, the president’s joint fundraising committee.

According to the fund’s page, by donating, people have the chance to win a trip to meet Obama and Biden — who once served as Obama’s vice president. The travel and hotel stay will be covered, and the winner will get to meet both men, memorializing it with a photo.

Obama reportedly promised to do everything in his power to boost Biden to reelection during a lunch meeting at the White House in June, per the Washington Post.

During the meeting, he also allegedly warned Biden of former president Donald Trump’s political prowess and stranglehold on the Republican Party. Trump is the front-runner in the Republican primary race, besting each competitor by double digits.

In a statement to the Washington Post, Obama Senior Adviser Eric Schultz said, “We place a huge emphasis on finding creative ways to reach new audiences, especially tools that can be directly tied to voter mobilization or volunteer activations.”

“We are deliberate in picking our moments because our objective is to move the needle,” he added.

As Biden enlists the help of prominent Democrats across the country, the help of Obama is likely the most beneficial. Obama, who survived his own reelection bid in 2012, is the most famous former president, according to a 2023 survey from YouGov.

He is also the eighth most popular, behind only former presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, George Washington, John F. Kennedy, and most popular, Abraham Lincoln.

Obama is also the most popular politician in the country, per YouGov’s second quarter of 2023 rankings. Biden’s Vice President, Kamala Harris, is sixth on the list, and the current president himself is 11th.
