LAYTON — Utah roads are getting snowier as we head into winter, proving it’s more important than ever to be safe while driving.

Driving in the snow can be scary, but it’s a necessary skill to have when you live in the state with the “greatest snow on earth.”

Every time I am driving in the snow, I’m grateful my dad took me to an empty parking lot at 16 years old to practice how to correct a car when it fishtails. I still get super stressed on icy roads, but I am more confident I know what to do if things go wrong.

The Utah Highway Patrol posted on Instagram on Friday morning showing a trooper’s dashcam video that captured a close call on U.S. 89 in Davis County.

In the video, trooper Juan Branchini is changing lanes, when a white van starts sliding. The van spins sideways and crosses into the lane of traffic in front of Branchini, who had to swerve to the right to avoid colliding.

Utah Highway Patrol said all drivers in the area steered clear of the vehicle that slid and no crashes occurred. Troopers remind everyone to slow down in icy conditions and to check your tires to ensure they can handle winter conditions.
