How Baltimore Orioles Could Trade for Seattle Mariners Ace Bryce Miller
One way or another, the Baltimore Orioles need to add some pitching to their roster this offseason.
Even if they are fortunate enough to bring back Corbin Burnes, who is a free agent and could command a contract north of $200 million, reinforcements are needed. Injuries decimated this group in 2024, proving once again a team can never have too much pitching.
The rehabs of Kyle Bradish and Tyler Wells are both going well, but they won’t factor into the mix until midseason. Grayson Rodriguez and Zach Eflin would be their top options should Burnes leave, and the team will likely give Trevor Rogers another chance after acquiring him from the Miami Marlins ahead of the deadline in July.
If the team isn’t going to spend in free agency, a trade could be made.
One player who has been suggested as a target for them is Bryce Miller of the Seattle Mariners. The young righty heading to the Orioles is one trade Jim Bowden of The Athletic would love to see completed during the Winter Meetings.
He would be an excellent addition to the Baltimore rotation, coming off a strong 2024 campaign. In only his second season as a Major Leaguer, he has already shown capable of being a front-end starter.
Of course, to acquire talent, you have to be willing to part with some assets as well.
Who could be the centerpiece of a trade package heading back to the Mariners? Bowden suggested top prospect Coby Mayo as a potential piece.
“Meanwhile, the Mariners desperately need a corner infield impact bat. Top prospect Coby Mayo can play either corner, with first base being his best long-term position,” he wrote.
Currently the No. 1 rated prospect in the Orioles farm system, Mayo is Major League-ready. Baltimore just doesn’t have a spot open for him in their everyday lineup. First base features Ryan O’Hearn and Ryan Mountcastle, while third base could be where Jordan Westburg and Ramon Urias end up depending on how things shake out at second base.
Mayo mashed in the Minor Leagues this past season, recording a .293/.372/.592 slash line with 25 home runs and 73 RBI. If he is given a chance to play regularly, he will factor into the Rookie of the Year mix. That’s is how good he is.
Parting with a player of that caliber and potential is never easy. But, a swap of young studs could help push Baltimore closer to being legitimate contenders.
On paper, this is a deal that makes sense for both teams. They are each dealing from a position of strength to address a weakness, which is the ideal way to make trades in baseball.

USA Coach Mauricio Pochettino To Throw Out First Pitch At Seattle Mariners Game
U.S. men’s national team coach Mauricio Pochettino will throw the first pitch before Friday night’s Major League Baseball game between the Seattle Mariners and Toronto Blue Jays, which the team was invited to attend.
Pochettino played catch with a few of his players before Friday’s practice at Husky Soccer Stadium. The U.S. plays Belgium in the World Cup round of 16 on Monday at Seattle Stadium.
Pochettino has also joined tens of thousands of fans in singing John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads” after the USA wins. The 54-year-old coach, who was born in Argentina and lives in Spain, has fully embraced the American experience this summer.
U.S. forward Folarin Balogun, who was born in the New York City borough of Brooklyn to Nigerian parents but raised in London, marveled at the opportunities he, his teammates and the coaching staff have been afforded.
“I think that sort of stuff can only happen in America. So, I’m very, very proud,” Balogun said. “This is a unique experience for me, being in the World Cup in your home nation. And, I think you’re seeing, we’ve been able to be so focused, but, at the same time have so many things we can do to distract ourselves and to take our mind off the high-pressure environment. This evening will be another opportunity to do that.”

Seattle’s Lake Union to light up with big July 4 fireworks show for America’s 250th
SEATTLE — Fireworks are set to light up the sky above Lake Union on Saturday night as Seattle marks America’s 250th birthday on the Fourth of July.
Crews are preparing more than 7,000 pounds of fireworks for the Seafair show over the water, with hundreds of thousands of spectators expected at Gas Works and Lake Union parks.
This year’s festivities come as visitors from around the globe are in Seattle ahead of another World Cup match featuring Team USA on Monday.
One major change for this year’s celebration is that Gas Works Park will be gated off and will require tickets for entry. Seafair organizers say the new system is intended to help manage the expected increased capacity and keep spectators safe.

Planned activities during the day on Saturday include an interactive Seafair coloring wall and all-American games, where people can compete in a pie-eating contest, sack races, and a water balloon toss. Musical performances are scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
Free parking is available in the surrounding Gas Works Park neighborhood, but finding a spot is expected to be difficult. Organizers are urging people to give themselves extra time and consider rideshare, carpooling, or public transportation.
Fireworks sales and setting off fireworks are illegal in many areas of western Washington, making large public shows a safer option for many people.
Spectators at Gas Works Park will notice some changes this year. The city recently removed ladders, catwalks, and platforms from the structures there after the death of a 14-year-old last summer.
The teen’s family said the city failed to address dangerous conditions around the park’s towers despite years of warnings and several injuries.
