Where to find the best salads in the Bay Area
La Calenda, deep in Wine Country, is one of the most elegant places to get Mexican food in the entire region. Part of the Thomas Keller Restaurant group, La Calenda’s respect for the cuisine can be seen with great handmade corn tortillas, made from in-house nixtamalized corn, and a charcoal-burning grill. The menu draws inspiration for several regions of the country; the Caesar salad ($17) is inspired by Tijuana. It appears deceptively simple, with romaine lettuce covered in a tangy, mustard-forward dressing and fuzzy parmesan cheese shavings. It extols the less-is-more virtue of the form, created by Hotel Caesar’s in Tijuana. Dine inside the cozy dining room or on the scenic patio.
