Fentanyl deaths in San Francisco on pace to set record high

Fentanyl deaths in Democratic-run San Francisco are on pace to set a record high after at least 71 people died due to accidental overdoses last month.

Accidental overdoses have contributed to at least 473 deaths in 2023, with 385 those being caused by fentanyl, according to a report.

Those numbers put overdose deaths in the city for the entire year on pace to surpass 2022, and possibly reach up to 800 deaths.

“80% of the deaths to date in 2023, overdose deaths are now caused by Fentanyl,” Dr. Grant Colfax, San Francisco’s director of health, said.

“It pains me to share that this is the highest overdose deaths San Francisco has experienced.”

When fentanyl first hit the streets of San Francisco, it was mixed with other narcotics, but, now, residents are choosing to use the drug by itself, the city Health Department said.

“Fentanyl has become cheaper, more potent and more available,” Colfax said.

At least 25,000 people in San Francisco are being treated for mental health problems and substance abuse, according to the Health Department.
