The city charter requires the mayor to receive a specific salary rate, and Lurie will automatically donate all but $1 of those wages back to the city, according to his spokesperson, Max Szabo.

Lurie’s net worth is estimated to be up to nearly $33 million, according to the San Francisco Standard. His background represents a sharp contrast from Breed, a fellow San Francisco native who grew up in the city’s public housing. Her salary for the 2024–25 fiscal year is $383,760, according to a July report from the city’s Civil Service Commission.

Lurie will be the first San Francisco mayor in nearly a century to have never served in elected office before taking over City Hall. He previously started and ran an anti-poverty nonprofit called the Tipping Point.

A moderate Democrat, Lurie ran a campaign focused on bringing change to what he often referred to as a corrupt and dysfunctional political environment in San Francisco, and he embraced being the only leading candidate with no prior experience working in City Hall.

“Hope is alive and well in San Francisco,” Lurie told supporters at a press conference in November. “Our mandate is to show how government must deliver on its promises. Clean and safe streets for all. Tackling our drug and behavioral health crisis, shaking up the corrupt and ineffective bureaucracy, building enough housing so our neighbors can afford to live here.”

Lurie follows a small handful of wealthy elected officials who have given back all but $1 of their salary in the form of nontaxable donations. That list includes former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, whom Lurie has said he looks up to as a model for city leadership, as well as former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

SAN FRANCISCO – A passenger on the Ruby Princess is believed to have gone overboard ahead of the cruise ship’s arrival Monday in San Francisco, according to officials.

In a statement, Princess Cruises said the 72-year-old man was not found following an extensive review of closed-circuit television footage and several searches of the vessel.

“Having ruled out other possibilities, this is being treated as a man overboard,” the statement read. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the guest who was traveling alone.”

Princess Cruises did not immediately return a message seeking additional details about the incident, including where the passenger was believed to have gone overboard.

Around 3 p.m. Monday, the U.S. Coast Guard air station in Sacramento dispatched a C-27 aircrew to help scour the waters roughly 45 miles off of Monterey. The air station in San Francisco joined the search effort about an hour later.

The Ruby Princess arrived in San Francisco around 6:50 a.m. Monday following a five-day trip to Ensenada. It was set to depart at 5 p.m. for a 16-day voyage to the Hawaiian Islands.

The San Francisco Giants are expected to have a smaller payroll in 2025, a questionable decision. However, when Buster Posey took the job, he should’ve 100% understood that. Posey, now the president of baseball operations, was likely in the mix in those conversations.

That doesn’t diminish the fact that the Giants need to spend money to compete, but from an organizational standpoint, it isn’t the craziest idea to want Posey to have a full offseason before the owners with big pockets up the payroll.

However, that might take San Francisco out of the mix for some of the top players on the market. With a clear need to improve this winter, that’s disheartening.

According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Giants reduced payroll might hurt their chances of signing Willy Adames. He added that Ha-Seong Kim might be the better fit due to the payroll issue. He did acknowledge that Adames is the better fit long-term for the Giants, who are hoping to sign a shortstop to add some reinforcements to that side of the infleld.

“Perhaps Ha-Seong Kim would be a more suitable fit, coming at a lower price as he recovers from shoulder surgery and without the additional cost of a draft pick (both Adames and Bregman received qualifying offers),” Rosenthal wrote.

Adames is a better player than Kim, but if they end up with the South Korean native, he wouldn’t be a bad consolation prize.

When Adames is at his best, it’s intriguing to think about what San Francisco’s offense could look like. His numbers would likely be much different at Oracle due to the dimensions, but he’d add a different dynamic to this lineup, something the club is dying for.

Kim is more of an all-around guy. His lack of power and other issues at the plate doesn’t make him a five-tool guy, but it’s important not to let the numbers get in the way of who he truly is. Kim is a very good player and would be an excellent addition to the Giants. He is also a Gold Glove-caliber fielder.

Still, that doesn’t take away from not having money to spend. There are many elite players on the market this winter, and if San Francisco found a way to sign a few of them, things could be much different.

Instead, it sounds like that won’t happen until the 2025-26 offseason, at the earliest.
