SAN DIEGO, CA — A predawn fire gutted an abandoned building in Hillcrest Tuesday, prompting evacuations and causing an estimated $160,000 worth of damage, authorities reported.

The non-injury blaze erupted at about 3:15 a.m. in the 3700 block of Fourth Avenue, just south of Robinson Avenue, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

Emergency crews cleared residents out of nearby homes while extinguishing the flames, SDFRD Battalion Chief Juan Flores told OnSceneTV. Firefighters were able to contain the blaze to the detached garage in which it originated, Flores said.
