Cabrillo to be focus of local conference this week
Re “Why won’t National Park Service correct Cabrillo Monument errors?” (Sept. 19): This letter is timely. There will be a shared conference titled “Cabrilho and Beyond” on Sept. 26-28 at SDSU, SD History Center Balboa Park and the Cabrillo Monument. At this conference the community will hear the most updated scholarly research as to Cabrillo’s identity and explorations. In recent years historical crew master lists of explorations have been discovered identifying Cabrillo as Joao Rodrigues “o Portugues.” Other identifiers of Cabrillo’s Portuguese vs. Spanish lineage of the time is research clarifying terminology used such as “Natural vs. Native.” Further research discoveries using carbon dating will be discussed.
