Public safety news from The Oregonian/OregonLive.

Southbound lanes of Interstate 5 were closed Tuesday in Eugene for over an hour after a crate of screws fell onto the roadway.

State transportation crews don’t know how or when they landed there, but another driver hit the load around 7 a.m., spilling the contents across the lanes, said Oregon Department of Transportation spokesperson Mindy McCartt.

A street sweeper cleared the lanes by 8:15 a.m., McCartt said.

She used the opportunity to remind drivers to always secure their loads.
