Monsoon moisture to bring weekend showers, storms to New Mexico

Good morning!

We have made it to the weekend after a very active weather day to end the workweek. This morning, a few showers and storms were indicated on radar moving through Dona Ana and Luna Counties. A few showers are also lingering between the Texas and New Mexico state line in Roosevelt County. Temperatures this morning are seasonable in Albuquerque as well fall to about 67 degrees at the Sunport. Today’s forecast has showers and thunderstorms forecasted for New Mexico with abundant monsoon moisture sitting over the state. Showers and storms are expected to develop in the early afternoon over the high terrain of some of the mountains before becoming scattered to widespread as the day goes on.

It is possible that some of these showers and thunderstorms will bring localized heavy rainfall to sections of New Mexico. There is a higher risk for communities in the west, south and southwest Colorado to see heavy rain that could lead to flash flooding concerns. The National Weather Service (NWS) has a Flood Watch in place for the burnscars once again around the Ruidoso and Capitan communities. Yesterday, Ruidoso did have at least one Flash Flood Warning issued from the NWS and did see water levels rise in local waterways. Today’s Flood Watch will be in effect from 12-6 pm for that area. Saturday’s forecast will have showers and thunderstorms lingering throughout New Mexico this evening and overnight as Sunday approaches.

Sunday’s forecast is a rinse and repeat situation with additional storms forecasted. There is still a risk for localized heavy rainfall throughout the state that could lead to flooding concerns once again. Monsoon moisture will continue after Sunday through next week with daily shower and storm chances. Drier air is expected to come back to at least eastern New Mexico starting on Monday limiting shower and storm chances for some communities. Drier weather is possible by the middle of next week for sections of New Mexico while storm chances persist in the west and south. High temperatures will slowly warm next week across the state with temperatures reaching the upper 90s and low 100s once again for eastern and southern communities. In Albuquerque, right now, high temperatures will be trending in the low to mid 90s. Have a great weekend!

Monsoon moisture continues across New Mexico into next week

Monsoon moisture continues across New Mexico into next week

We saw another active monsoon day across the state today as slow-moving storms developed this afternoon. Monsoon moisture will remain in place Sunday as another weak low pressure system moves across New Mexico. Storms may move a little faster, but more widespread development is possible. The heaviest rain will likely fall across Sacramento Mountains and the Gila, with another threat of flash flooding.

Storm chances will gradually decrease early next week as high pressure strengthens and pushes the deepest monsoon moisture farther west. Isolated storms will still develop over the western mountains Monday and Tuesday, but hotter and drier weather will spread across more of the state by Wednesday and Thursday. Parts of eastern New Mexico could climb back into the triple digits.

Miyagishima drops out of governor’s race, endorses Hull

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Former Las Cruces Mayor Ken Miyagishima, who ran for governor as a Democrat and then as an independent, is endorsing Republican Gregg Hull.

Miyagishima ended his bid for New Mexico governor after weighing a Supreme Court appeal to stay on the ballot.

Miyagishima said on Friday he decided not to pursue an appeal to the Supreme Court over his ballot status.

“I have known Mayor Hull for almost 12 years. He is intelligent, hardworking, and a man of integrity. His record reflects his dedication to the people of both Rio Rancho and New Mexico,” Miyagishima said. “My goal is to help transform Mayor Hull into Governor Hull, deliver for the southwestern part of our state, and close the gap in our Native American communities. I am eager to mobilize support in southern New Mexico and our native lands for our future governor, Gregg Hull!”

Hull called the endorsement a sign of shared priorities as the governor’s race moves forward.

“Ken’s support demonstrates our shared commitment to the people of New Mexico,” Hull said. “Together, we will tackle the challenges in our communities, stimulate our economy, and ensure that every New Mexican has a voice in government.”

Hull is running against Democrat Deb Haaland, the former Secretary of the Interior.
