Alan Shoemaker: Windy days lie ahead this week
While the days ahead will be warmer and drier, the winds will pick up again, increasing fire danger particularly in southern New Mexico.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Rain and snow showers across central and eastern New Mexico tapered off Saturday evening along with skies clearing quickly before midnight.
Sunday and Monday look dry with much milder temperatures and light winds due to high pressure moving over the state.
Stronger southwest winds build up on Tuesday and west-to-northwest winds on Wednesday as a system moves quickly across the desert southwest. Some light rain and snow showers are possible across western and central New Mexico Tuesday night through midday Wednesday.
There will be some fire weather concerns in south-central New Mexico Tuesday and southeast New Mexico Tuesday and Wednesday.
Very strong to damaging winds are looking more likely for many areas late Thursday and especially Friday as a deep Pacific storm moves into the intermountain west.
Beneficial rain and snow move into western and north central New Mexico Thursday evening into Friday with wind gusts of 50 to 75 mph and blowing dust across much of central and eastern New Mexico.
