10 New Mexico public lands get new names amid Native slur phase-out
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Ten new names have been unveiled for public lands in New Mexico that beforehand used a derogatory time period for a Native girl.
America Geological Survey launched the brand new names for locations in New Mexico and 33 different states this week. The renaming effort is a part of Inside Secretary Deb Haaland’s push to take away the anti-Native slur from U.S. place names.
New Mexico’s lands are in 9 counties and consist of 4 named mountain summits, three streams, one spring, one reservoir and one valley, as follows by their new names.
Summits
- Tamayameh Kah Sta Mah, Sandoval County
- Grandview Peak, Sierra County
- Bar Mountain, Doña Ana County
- Bear Peak, Socorro County
Streams
- Meason Creek, Grant County
- Tin Creek, Catron and Sierra counties
- Janey Creek, Chaves County
Spring
- Tuurkava Paachihpi Spring, San Juan County
Reservoir
- Lone Butte Tank, Otero County
Valley
- Horse Camp Canyon, Sierra County
