Stimulus update: Direct payment worth $2,500 from Montana rebate being sent through over next 12 days
The Montana Department of Revenue will conclude its distribution of an income tax rebate of up to $2,500 to eligible residents in the state in 12 days.
The state has been sending income tax rebates, which are based on the 2021 tax returns of individual filers or couples, to eligible Montana taxpayers since July, and the state will finish its distribution of the checks on Dec. 31.

The rebate being sent by the state offers up to $2,500 for married joint filers and up to $1,250 for individual filers, with the exact figure an eligible taxpayer will receive equal to the maximum amount based on filing status or the amount on line 20 of their 2021 return, whichever is less.
To qualify for the rebate, a taxpayer must have been a resident of Montana for the entire 2021 tax year, filed tax returns for 2020 and 2021 on time, not been claimed as a dependent on someone else’s tax forms, and had a figure greater than zero on line 20 of the Montana 2021 income tax form.

Taxpayers who qualify will receive the rebate automatically and do not need to file any additional forms to get the payment, according to the Montana Department of Revenue.
“Montanans overpaid their taxes, and we’re giving it back,” Gov. Greg Gianforte (R-MT) said in a statement about the rebate. “I look forward to getting this money back into Montanans’ pockets where it belongs.”
