Former Idaho sheriff accused of threatening church group pleads guilty to aggravated assault

BLACKFOOT, Idaho — The previous Bingham County sheriff has reached a plea settlement with the prosecution group.
Craig Thomas Rowland has pleaded responsible to a felony cost of aggravated assault, court docket information present.
Rowland was charged with felonies for aggravated assault and aggravated battery and a misdemeanor for the exhibition of a weapon in November after he threatened with a gun a carful of teenagers.
The then-sheriff pointed a gun at a car containing seven ladies and their church group chief in response to the ladies placing a “grateful turkey” on his entrance door.
Rowland tendered his resignation in July. On Aug. 15, Chief Deputy Jeff Gardner was named the interim sheriff.
A jury trial to determine the matter was to start on Oct. 24. As an alternative, Rowland is now scheduled to be sentenced on Oct. 25.
He faces as much as 5 years in jail and a $5,000 nice for aggravated assault.
