HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A pair of hiking trails at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park that were forced to close due to the eruption earlier this month are now back open.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park said Kau Desert Trail and Maunaiki Trail were previously closed due to the June 3 eruption near Kilauea’s remote upper southwest rift zone.

Visitors will be able to see the new cracks formed by the fissure eruption that lasted about eight hours. However, that area in the southwest rift zone remains closed due to volcanic activity from the 2018 eruption.

Park officials said Kilauea is not erupting, but there is slight unrest beneath the summit.
