15-year-old Hilo boy arrested for allegedly making online threats to several schools

HAWAII ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) – A 15-year-old Hilo boy was arrested Wednesday for allegedly making online threats to several Hilo and Puna area schools, Hawaii Island police said.

According to police, there were various social media posts relating to members of a “notorious gang” being on the island and potentially planning to go to a school in Hilo on Thursday.

While there were no direct threats reported, HPD said the posts prompted parents from several school to contact police after learning about the posts.

Officers stood by during school drop off Thursday morning as a precaution.

Investigators found the 15-year-old high school student responsible for the online posts and arrested him once he arrived to school.

The investigation is ongoing.
