Fans fill the stands at Denver’s Ball Arena for professional women’s hockey game, hope for a home team
Professional women’s hockey took center stage at Denver’s Ball Arena on Sunday, and many fans are hoping to see more.
The Minnesota Frost and New York Sirens both hit the road to show the City of Denver just what women’s hockey can be. This is a groundswell moment, and there’s been a lot of talk about whether Denver would be a good place for the PWHL to expand. The crowd that showed up on Sunday is a good indication that they would be well supported.
Hockey fan Ali Butler told CBSColorado, “Yeah, just kinda gives you goosebumps. It’s super exciting!”
The fans in the stands on Sunday had no place they’d rather be than cheering on the women playing at a professional level at Ball Arena; the stands were packed.
“One hundred percent. I mean, when I was playing in college, we didn’t have the stadium full, so it’s awesome to come here today and see the whole arena sold out,” said Butler.
Colorado already has an avid hockey fanbase thanks to the Colorado Avalanche.
“Ever since the Avs won the Stanley Cup, it’s clear we’re a hockey city,” said hockey fan Mitchell Curley. “So, you know the Avs, with DU being competitive, with CU being a great hockey team too, I think the next logical step is to have a women’s hockey team here.”
Some fans shared how excited they were to support sports teams who may not feel like they’re getting a fair shot.
“It was just fun to support women’s sports. I’m a former college athlete [in] women’s sports, and it’s just any time I get a chance, I want to come out and support them,” said Butler.
As the Frost and the Sirens pushed each other to greatness, those with big dreams said their struggle inspires young girls.
“I want to be one of them too, when I grow up,” one young fan shared excitedly.
Another added, “It means a lot. It feels good that there can be girls, too, who can play instead of the boys.”
That’s ultimately what it’s all about. Anyone can compete; they just have to want it. And many hope that tonight’s game could ultimately lead to talks about a women’s team in the Mile High City.
At least 200 people crowded into the Denver City & County building on Friday morning after receiving a scam text about a traffic violation and court hearing.
Colorado is at least the ninth state to be hit by the scam that tries to get people to pay a fine through a QR code printed on an official-looking “final enforcement notice,” county court spokesperson Carolyn Tyler said.
Courts in Arizona, Delaware, Maryland, Missouri, New Jersey, Oregon, South Dakota, and Virginia reported similar scams, she said.
The fake document claims to be from the state of Colorado and the Denver County Traffic Division and is titled “Official Notice of Default and Enforcement Action.” The form instructs people to pay a fee by scanning a QR code on the form or show up for a court hearing — in this case, at 9 a.m. Friday in Denver.
“The court does not contact people this way,” Tyler said. “If you do get communications from the court, you should expect to see your name, your case number and specific identifying information.”
Court employees will never reach out by text to demand payment, county officials said.
Anyone who gets a suspicious text claiming they are in default for a traffic violation should report the information to local police and the Colorado Attorney General’s Office online at stopfraudcolorado.gov or the Denver District Attorney’s Office consumer fraud hotline at 720-913-9179.

Yes, injuries had their say. Nikola Jokić, Aaron Gordon, Cameron Johnson, Christian Braun and Peyton Watson all missed significant time. Gordon and Watson didn’t play in Thursday’s Game 6.
But even with that context in mind, Denver came up well shy of its potential. And that could mean a dramatic summer.
Given the Nuggets’ early exits from each of the last three postseasons, few would bat an eye over anything short of a Jokić trade. But it may be difficult to truly overhaul the roster through trades.

Kaden Davis is taking his talents to the United Football League.
The former Denver Broncos wide receiver signed with the UFL’s Houston Gamblers earlier this week, and he could make his debut as early as Friday evening when the Gamblers face the Columbus Aviators (5:00 p.m. MT on Fox and FuboTV).
Davis (6-1, 193 pounds) entered the league with the Broncos as an undrafted free agent out of Northwest Missouri State in 2022. After spending part of his rookie season on Denver’s practice squad, Davis played for the Michigan Panthers (then of the USFL) in the spring of 2023.
After that, Davis spent time with the Arizona Cardinals (2023) and Detroit Lions (2024) before returning to the Broncos as a member of the practice squad in 2024. He was later cut, re-signed, and cut again by Denver that fall. Davis joined the Cleveland Browns’ practice squad late in the 2024 campaign, and he remained with the Browns in 2025. He’ll now look to impress in the UFL.
Elsewhere on the ex-Bronco front, the San Francisco 49ers signed running back Sincere McCormick, who had a brief stint on Denver’s practice squad last season.
