COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – Hundreds of military families are getting some help ahead of the school year.

On Saturday, Operation Homefront handed out 400 backpacks filled with school supplies as part of their 17th annual Back-To-School Brigade. It was one of dozens of events across the country, aimed at helping tens of thousands of families.

Operation Homefront said families in Colorado Springs with two children require two adults working full-time for more than $30/hour in order to support themselves. However, unemployment among military spouses is above 20%, according to Operation Homefront, while service members’ income potential is capped at their rank and time in service.

The organization said school supply shopping is the second biggest spending event of the year for parents and they want to make sure military children have everything they need to succeed in the classroom while their parents avoid the financial burden.
