Deion Sanders blasts Colorado’s doubters after stunning Week 1 upset: ‘Keep receipts’
Deion Sanders took a page out of Robert Saleh’s playbook after Colorado’s Week 1 upset against No. 17 — and last year’s College Football Playoff runner-up — TCU.
In a press conference exchange with a reporter, Sanders said that he saw what the writer wrote and asked “do you believe now” in Colorado after its 45-42 win.
“I read through that bull-junk you wrote,” Sanders said. “I read through that. I sifted through all that.”
When the reporter didn’t answer, Sanders responded with, “You don’t believe. You just answered it. You don’t believe. Next question.”
Sanders also said while exiting the press conference that he will “keep receipts,” according to a video from Yahoo! Sports, and he mentioned receipts at least two other times during postgame interviews.
It was the latest example of the spotlight and attention following Colorado since Sanders left Jackson State for the Pac-12 program — which won just one game last year — in December.
He completely revamped Colorado’s roster after arriving, with dozens of players arriving and others leaving when Sanders, for better or for worse, said there’s “going to be change.”
The Buffaloes became the ultimate wild-card team.
They were unranked to start the season, but with Sanders in charge, his 27-6 record from Jackson State could still be a reachable — through quite lofty — standard.
But his receipts comments after the season-opening victory followed a similar approach that Saleh, the Jets’ head coach, took after the Ravens crushed the Jets in the 2022 season-opener, which marked the start of Saleh’s second season with the franchise.
He remained upbeat in the trajectory of the franchise, even if quarterback Zach Wilson’s play and the Jets’ 24-9 loss suggested otherwise, and insisted that the Jets — which ended up finishing 7-10 — were building a foundation.
“I know it’s going to happen,” Saleh said the day after their loss against the Ravens. “We’re all taking receipts on all the people who continually mock and say that we aren’t going to do anything. I’m taking receipts, and I’m going to be more than happy to share them with all of you when it’s all said and done.”
Sanders’ tenure with the Buffaloes started on a positive note, though, and if their next 11 games resemble what unfolded across 60 minutes against TCU, Colorado will continue climbing the rankings.
Shedeur Sanders, his son, completed 38-of-47 passes for 510 yards and four touchdowns, while four receivers topped 100 yards and Colorado’s defense forced two interceptions.
“A lot of you didn’t believe in us,” Shedeur said postgame, according to the Associated Press. “It’s crazy because you just got to understand our coach, Coach Prime, my dad, everywhere he went, he was a winner. Every game, every opportunity, he took advantage of.”
The Buffaloes will host Nebraska on Saturday, marking Sanders’ first game at Folsom Field since his hiring.
