Opinion: The time has come for the California Theatre to come down to make way for housing
Re “San Diego pushes for theater’s demolition” (Aug. 13): The one purpose the previous California Theatre constructing has been boarded up for 32 years is as a result of it was designated as a metropolis of San Diego Historic Useful resource.
That designation has prevented it from being changed with new housing that may have benefited 1000’s of individuals over time and given town tens of millions of {dollars} in new property taxes.
Historic designation needs to be voluntary solely, not pressured properties all around the metropolis, when town has no proof that designation is for the better good of society. Its personal Actual Property Belongings Division can inform that designation lowers the worth of city-owned properties, restricts what might be achieved with them and raises prices to take care of them.
Nearly all of individuals don’t actually care about historic preservation. The proof is that not one of the metropolis’s historic museums generate income.
