Opinion: It should be curtains for the old California Theatre building
Re “California Theatre proprietor secures decaying constructing with armed safety group and new doorways” (Nov. 2): The long-abandoned California Theatre, considered one of Downtown’s largest and longest-lasting eyesores and a homeless encampment, hasn’t been allowed to be demolished since 2006 due to the actions of the preservation group Save Our Heritage Organisation (SOHO). Regardless of hundreds of thousands of {dollars} spent by builders, nothing has resulted in something being constructed there as an enchancment.
Even now, SOHO, a corporation with zero monetary funding, has circumstances that should be met earlier than the location may be developed. Why can’t the previous builders and the town maintain SOHO financially liable for his or her losses?
After 22 years, isn’t it time for the town to cancel SOHO’s grip on the location and encourage a financially possible mission?
