Magnitude 4.8 earthquake rattles Northern California

The bigger quake struck 12 miles east of Petrolia with a depth of 19 miles at 3:20 a.m., the USGS said. Petrolia, a town of about 1,000 people, is 5 miles from the ocean. The epicenter was 35 miles south of the larger town of Eureka.

A 4.1 magnitude aftershock hit in the ocean, several miles from the first quake, at 3:31 a.m. A second aftershock struck near the first big quake at 6:04 a.m. with a magnitude of 3.1, and a fourth magnitude 3.1 aftershock occurred in the ocean at 7:15 a.m.
