Consumer tip: A look at California’s return policies

Whether you made a purchase and changed your mind or received a gift and want to return or exchange it, knowing your return rights and the retailer’s obligations should make the transaction smoother.

California Civil Code section 1723 requires retailers that have a policy of not giving full cash or credit refunds, or not allowing equal exchanges, or any combination of the two, for at least seven days following purchase, to conspicuously display the details of that policy on signs at each register and sales counter, at each public entrance, on tags for goods the policy applies to or on order forms. There are exceptions to this requirement including food and perishable goods; goods marked “as is,” “all sales final” or similar language; goods used or damaged after purchased; and goods that can’t be resold due to health considerations. Many retailers also post extended return periods applicable to the holidays only.

If you don’t see a return policy displayed, ask to see it.
