California considers ban on caste discrimination

Earlier than the Seattle metropolis council vote, almost 100 organisations and companies had written to it, asking it to oppose the caste ordinance. On the time, Suhag Shukla, co-founder and government director of the Hindu American Basis, had instructed the BBC that whereas caste discrimination was unsuitable and violated core rules of her faith, she was in opposition to the legislation as a result of it despatched a message “that our group, which makes up lower than 2% of the inhabitants, is so uniquely bigoted that we’d like a particular class beneath the legislation to police us, reinforcing xenophobic stereotypes we had hoped the US had moved past”.
