SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA – Arizona Coyotes General Manager Bill Armstrong announced today that the Coyotes have signed defenseman Matt Dumba to a one-year contract. As per club policy, terms of the contracts were not disclosed.
“We are very pleased to have Matt join our organization,” said Armstrong. “He is a talented, reliable, physical defenseman who competes hard every night and will contribute offensively. He is also a great leader who will add a veteran presence to our blue line. We are very excited to have him on our team this season.”
Last season, the 29-year-old Dumba recorded 4-10-14 and 81 penalty minutes (PIM) in 79 regular-season games with the Minnesota Wild and added two assists in six Stanley Cup Playoff games. He ranked second among Wild defensemen in goals and tied for fourth in points.
The 6-foot, 181-pound defenseman has played in 598 career NHL games over a 10-year career with the Wild. Over that time, Dumba registered 79-157-236, 399 PIM and a plus-53 rating, including a career-best 14 goals, 36 assists and 50 points in 2017-18 which saw him rank tied for 10th among NHL defensemen in goals. Dumba has also posted 5-10-15 and 39 PIM in 49 post-season games, including a career-high 2-2-4 in 10 playoff games in 2014-15 where he shared the team-lead in scoring among defensemen.
The Regina, SK native was the recipient of the 2020 King Clancy Memorial Trophy, awarded to the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice. In response to social unrest across North America, Dumba co-founded the Hockey Diversity Alliance, which aims to eradicate systemic racism and intolerance in hockey. A vocal activist on the subject, Dumba delivered a powerful message on the ice during the 2020 Stanley Cup Qualifiers and spearheaded the Rebuild Minnesota initiative to assist Minneapolis businesses impacted by riots and protests in the wake of the murder of George Floyd. As a result of his efforts to the cause, Dumba also received recognition as a finalist for the 2021 Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy.
On the international stage, Dumba has twice medaled for Team Canada, including most recently winning gold at the 2016 IIHF World Championships. The blueliner also served as the captain of the bronze medal-winning club at the 2012 IIHF U-18 World Championship where his 12 points (5-7-12) led all skaters in the tournament.
Dumba was originally drafted by the Wild in the first round (seventh overall) in the 2012 NHL Draft.
