Woman arrested for attempted murder after standoff in Southwest Alaska

GOODNEWS BAY, Alaska (KTUU) – A suspect was taken into custody after a standoff with Alaska State Troopers in a home in Goodnews Bay.

Troopers say 30-year-old Brendalee Merritt barricaded herself and a female victim inside the home after Merritt allegedly fired a gun at a person who was attempting a welfare check on the victim.

The Alaska State Trooper’s Southcentral SWAT Team was activated and flew in on a chartered flight and eventually arrested Merritt.

Merritt was charged with second-degree attempted murder, kidnapping, multiple felony assault charges, and misconduct involving Weapons — all involving domestic violence.

Merritt was transported to Yukon Kuskokwim Correctional Center. The victim received non-life-threatening injuries.
