BLM Alaska Hearth Service Smokejumpers traveled greater than 600 miles Thursday from Fairbanks to the jap Aleutian Chain responding to the Hazard Level Hearth (#074) close to Sand Level on Popof Island. The Sand Level Police Division reported the wildland fireplace burning in grass and brush two miles east of city. Eight firefighters parachuted close to the hearth, then labored within the steep coastal terrain, slicing a fireline for containment. They efficiently stopped the ahead development of the wind-driven fireplace, protecting it from reaching the landfill, a priority of Sand Level residents. The night report estimated the hearth at 40 acres with 50% containment. The smokejumpers will proceed extinguishing sizzling spots and securing the perimeter of the hearth in the present day.
