Ship headed to the Port of Alaska is leaking lubricant

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – A container ship that’s touring to the Port of Alaska is leaking lubricant, based on an announcement launched by the U.S. Coast Guard Saturday.

The Coast Guard was first notified Thurday night, “that the Maunalei, a 645-foot container ship, was leaking lubricant whereas transiting to the Port of Alaska.” The assertion went on to say, “The vessel, owned by Matson, Inc., was reportedly discharging a biodegradable, environmentally acceptable lubricant at a fee of roughly six gallons per hour. Given the low toxicity of the lubricant, the robust tidal currents, and the gradual launch fee, threats to the wildlife and assets within the area are anticipated to be minimal.”

The Coast Guard and associate businesses are monitoring the leak.
