Coldest air in 2 years moves across Alaska

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Fairbanks temperatures dropped to a low not seen in more than two years — a frigid 40 degrees below zero! Fort Yukon was also feeling the deep freeze as they hit 50 below during the day on Monday, which hasn’t happened since December of 2022.

Anchorage also saw temperatures below zero, from -1 degrees in the airport area to -12 to -19 degrees on the south and east ends of the city.

Like Southcentral earlier in the winter, heavy snow is a big problem in parts of Southeast Alaska because of the snowfall’s quick and persistent qualities.

The city saw 16.9 inches with the latest storm and is currently under a winter storm warning. Another 14 to 20 inches of snow could fall through Tuesday, with rain starting to mix in Tuesday night.

Farther north, a winter weather advisory for winds gusting to 40 mph and blowing for Skagway. And south, another advisory for freezing rain in the Petersburg area on Tuesday.

Wind chills 50 to 55 below make up the bulk of the winter weather advisories along the Dalton Highway to the north coastline. Winds will be gusting up to 40 mph.

This is the kind of deep cold that affects vehicles, sometimes fuel viscosity, water pipes and of course people and pets. Please give indoor shelter to pets in times of extreme weather.

Hot spots: Metlakatla and Sitka both hit 46 degrees.

Cold spot: Fort Yukon, where it dropped to 50 degrees below zero.
