While we may lose an hour of sleep this coming weekend, one clock store in California is gearing up for one of its busiest times of the year: daylight savings.

It’s the House of Clocks, the largest clock company in Northern California, which was recently celebrating 55 years of business.

It’s a place frozen in time. Just visit the store’s 240-year-old grandfather clock. It’s got plenty of stories to tell, dating back to 1780.

“This is the oldest piece we have right now,” clocksmith Joey Hohn said.

The House of Clocks is on the outskirts of Downtown Lodi in San Joaquin County.

“We have new, we have vintage, we have antique,” co-owner Sandy Hohn shared. “Honestly, it feels like not a day goes by that we don’t get a phone call or an email of somebody wanting to sell something for 100 different reasons.”

The clock store has been with the Hohn family for three generations. It’s all thanks to one family heirloom.

“When the first war started, [my grandparents] left everything and had to move,” Joey Hohn explained. “After the Second World War, my grandpa was stationed in Germany. They went back to the house that had been abandoned and the neighbor who they left the property to said, ‘As far as I’m concerned, everything in the house is still yours.’ They went back and got this, so this is my great-great-grandparents’ clock.”

You can find just about anything in the House of Clocks, from old grandfather clocks to clocks that can fit in the palm of your hand.

What you can’t find anywhere else is the Hohns’ love for Lodi.

“We’ve made so many friends over the years out of customers,” Sandy Hohn said. “Friends that are just wonderful, that love collecting, and we keep them repaired for their families, which is awesome. They have sentimental value that’s passed down.”

That same love for the city and their community runs in the family.

“We had a customer that wanted to repaint their dial,” Joey Hohn explained. “We told them no because it was her father’s who had passed away. Every time he went to wind the clock, he placed his thumb in the same spot. When we told her that smudge there on the dial was her father, she said, ‘Back away, don’t you dare.’ It was just a good memory we have.”

While you can’t turn back time, what we can do is keep memories alive and treasure the present moment.

“There’s so many personalities,” Sandy Hohn said. “We just try to find a good home for them.”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Logyn Greer and Desiree Wooten both scored 10 points in No. 6 seed Colorado’s 55-48 win over No. 11 seed Kansas on Thursday night to advance to the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Conference Tournament.

Greer shot 4 for 7 from the field and drained both her attempts from 3-point range from the Buffaloes (21-10). She had six rebounds and four blocks. Wooten added four assists.

Colorado was in foul trouble early, racking up seven fouls in the first quarter. A 9-0 run in the second quarter broke the game open for the Buffaloes and they entered halftime up 26-18. Their defense held Kansas to 36% (19 of 53) from the field and 15% (2 of 13) from 3-point range.

Kansas (19-13) was led in scoring by S’Mya Nichols, who put up 14. Her and Sania Copeland scored the only 3-pointers for the Jayhawks.

Colorado: Will play No. 3 seed Baylor on Friday. The Lady Bears are ranked No. 20 in the country.

Kansas: Will wait for an invitation into a postseason tournament.

The Hawaii Foodbank Kauai rolled out its recently dedicated Mobile Pantry refrigerated transporter to provide more than 150 emergency food packages for local Transportation Security Administration and U.S. Coast Guard workers caught up in a partial government shutdown.

The two agencies are part of the Department of Homeland Security, whose budget is frozen by congressional concerns over controversial actions by two other DHS agencies, ICE and CBP. Workers will not be paid until the budget is approved, although many are still required to work in essential positions.

In the meantime, some Kauai workers are struggling to keep their families fed without a full paycheck, and amid uncertainty as to how long the shutdown will last.

To help out, Hawaii Foodbank Kauai vehicles rolled up to the TSA administrative offices in Lihue, equipped to provide more than 150 emergency food packages. The packages included fresh milk, eggs, bread and produce, including apples, oranges, eggplants and cucumber. There was also frozen chicken and an assortment of canned goods.

“With the current socioeconomic landscape, many families are still struggling to make ends meet,” stated the 2024 Hunger Report that was released by the Hawaii Foodbank on Wednesday, coinciding with the launch of the statewide food drive by Lt. Gov. Sylvia Luke.”Hawaii has seen an increase of roughly 25 percent in prices for food at home — making it more difficult for families to access nourishing meals.”

The Hunger Report said during the last fiscal year, an average of more than 154,000 people on Oahu and Kauai turned to Hawaii Foodbank for help each month.

Tisha Remigio, the Hawaii Foodbank Kauai assistant manager who was helping with the emergency food distribution, was uncertain if there would be more food distributions for TSA workers and the USCG team.

“It’s up to them,” Remigio said.
