Johnny Grier, N.F.L.’s First Black Referee, Dies at 74

Johnny Grier, who grew to become the primary Black referee within the Nationwide Soccer League in 1988 and remained in that place, the highest one in an officiating crew, for 16 years, died on Tuesday in Pasadena, Md. He was 74.

His demise was introduced by his granddaughter Bryanna Grier. She didn’t cite a trigger.

Mr. Grier had been a highschool and faculty official when he joined the league in 1981 as a discipline choose, positioned on the sideline within the defensive backfield. He labored at first for the referee Jim Tunney’s officiating crew.

Mr. Grier minimized his standing as a pioneer. He advised Ebony journal in 1988 that “the primary time I make a name that goes in opposition to someone that they don’t like, I’m going to be simply one other referee.”

He believed that he had a neater job as a referee — which he referred to as babysitting the quarterback — than as a discipline choose.
