Downpours flood 405 Freeway, send tree crashing onto car

The impacts of Monday’s powerful storm are being felt around the Southland as rainwaters flooded a portion of the 405 Freeway in Long Beach and a large tree was toppled in Woodland Hills.

Sky 5 was over the southbound 405 Freeway near Cherry Avenue where a SigAlert was issued as motorists confined to the carpool area plowed through roughly a foot of water.

Video showed a big rig was even struggling to pass through the water shortly after 8 a.m.

A crew could be seen attempting to locate and clear the freeway’s drains in hopes the water would be allowed to recede.

Backup on the southbound side of the freeway was already extending into the Carson area. Traffic was also being affected on the northbound side with delays back to the 605 Freeway.

The flooding had subsided by 9 a.m. allowing officials to cancel the SigAlert.

Forecasters are calling for about an inch of rain to fall in many areas, mostly during the morning hours on Monday.

Larger amounts may be recorded in areas where thunderstorms are possible later in the day.
