Lawmakers, family react after learning Trump safe following second assassination attempt

News that former President Trump was safe after gunshots rang out nearby as he played at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach had lawmakers, family and others reacting to the news.

The shots were later determined to have been fired by Secret Service agents at a man who was carrying an AK-47 in what the FBI said appears to have been an assassination attempt. Trump was playing the club’s fifth hole, when the shots rang out and Secret Service agents rushed him to safety. Steven Cheung from the Trump Campaign communications team issued a statement after the event.

“President Trump is safe following gunshots in his vicinity. No further details at this time,” Cheung said.

Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., responded, saying, “Again folks!” It was a grim allusion to the attempted assassination of Trump July 13 at a rally in Butler, Pa.

“SHOTS FIRED at Trump Golf Course in West Palm Beach, Florida,” the younger Trump said. “An AK-47 was discovered in the bushes, per local law enforcement.”

“A suspect is in custody, and I commend the work of the Secret Service and their law enforcement partners for their vigilance and their efforts to keep the former President and those around him safe,” President Biden said in a statement, adding that he was “relieved” the Republican presidential candidate was “unharmed.”

“There is an active investigation into this incident as law enforcement gathers more details about what happened,” Biden said. “As I have said many times, there is no place for political violence or for any violence ever in our country, and I have directed my team to continue to ensure that Secret Service has every resource, capability and protective measure necessary to ensure the former President’s continued safety.”

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., retweeted a post from the Trump War Room about the safety of the former president.

“Just spoke with President Trump. He is one of the strongest people I’ve ever known,” Graham said. “He’s in good spirits and he is more resolved than ever to save our country.”

The White House also issued a statement about the situation.

“The President and Vice President have been briefed about the security incident at the Trump International Golf Course, where former President Trump was golfing,” the statement read. “They are relieved to know that he is safe. They will be kept regularly updated by their team.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson posted on X that he and his wife spent a few hours with Trump at Mar-a-Lago on Sunday, and thanked God for protecting him, “once again.”

“No leader in American history has endured more attacks and remained so strong and resilient,” Johnson wrote. “He is unstoppable.”

Rep. Anna Paulina, R-Fla., blamed the “radical left” for its continuous labeling of Republicans and Americans who want to have a safe and prosperous country as “threats to democracy.”

“This irresponsible rhetoric is causing people to get hurt. I just had to report my opponent’s [supporters] for soliciting strangers to send threatening packages to my home. She has refused to condemn this and her supporters for [doxing] me,” Paulina wrote. “This election is absolutely one of the most important elections in our history. We cannot bow down to intimidation, violence, and persecution. We must stand strong and bring home the win this November.

“Our family is praying for President Trump as he has taken on a monumental task,” she added.

Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., thanked God Trump was safe, adding he and his wife are grateful to law enforcement who bravely responded.

Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer said Sunday evening that he had been briefed by the acting director of the Secret Service about the second assassination attempt on Trump.

“I applaud the Secret Service for their quick response to ensure former President Trump’s safety,” Schumer wrote on X. “There is no place in this country for political violence of any kind. The perpetrator must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., echoed Schumer, saying, “Political violence has no place in a democratic society.”

Two members of the Task Force on the Attempted Assassination of Donald J. Trump, Chairman Mike Kelly, R-Pa., and ranking member Jason Crow, D-Colo., released a joint statement after the shooting that the FBI is now investigating as a second attempted assassination.

“The Task Force is monitoring this attempted assassination of former President Trump in West Palm Beach this afternoon. We have requested a briefing with the U.S. Secret Service about what happened and how security responded,” the two task force members wrote. “We are thankful that the former President was not harmed, but remain deeply concerned about political violence and condemn it in all of its forms. The Task Force will share updates as we learn more.”

Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., released the following statement after learning of the attempted assassination of Trump on Sunday.

“I am grateful to hear that President Trump is safe following today’s reported assassination attempt in Florida. I join in thanks for our hardworking law enforcement officers working to keep President Trump, his family, and his team safe,” she wrote. “However, we must ask ourselves how an assassin was allowed to get this close to President Trump again? There continues to be a lack of answers for the horrific assassination attempt in Pennsylvania, and we expect there to be a clear explanation of what happened today in Florida. Thankfully, God continues to watch over President Trump. As Americans, we must unite behind him in November to protect our republic and bring peace back to the world.”

Also reacting was New York Attorney General Letitia James.

“Political violence, in any form, cannot be accepted or normalized in this country,” she wrote on X.

Lawmakers request briefing with Secret Service on second attempted assassination on Trump

A group of bipartisan U.S. lawmakers on a task force looking into the assassination attempt against former President Trump have requested a briefing from the U.S. Secret Service on Sunday’s latest attempted murder of the former president.

On Sunday, a man with an AK-47 was fired upon by Secret Service agents after raising his rifle from a bush between 300 and 500 yards away from Trump, who was playing a round of golf at his club in West Palm Beach, Florida. The man fled and was later apprehended. The suspect has been identified as Ryan Routh.

In a statement later that day, task force chair Mike Kelly, R-Pa., and ranking member Jason Crow, D-Colo., released a joint statement after the attempted assassination.

“The Task Force is monitoring this attempted assassination of former President Trump in West Palm Beach this afternoon,” the bipartisan statement read. “We have requested a briefing with the U.S. Secret Service about what happened and how security responded.”

Trump says he is 'safe and well' following second attempt on his life

Former President Trump told his supporters on Sunday he was “safe and well” after a second attempted assassination on his life, this time in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Trump was on the fifth hole of the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach on Sunday afternoon when the U.S. Secret Service opened fire on a man, identified as Ryan Wesley Routh, who was allegedly armed with a rifle.

Authorities said Routh allegedly shoved the muzzle of his rifle through a chain-linked fence about 300 to 500 yards away from Trump.

Routh fled the scene and was quickly apprehended.

The 58-year-old man accused of pointing an AK-47 at former President Donald Trump on Sunday afternoon has a prolific arrest record that spans several decades.

Ryan Wesley Routh was arrested shortly after the incident at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Fla. Authorities said Secret Service agents fired at him after seeing the muzzle of his AK-47 pointing through a chain-link fence one hole ahead of where Trump was playing.

Authorities are treating the episode as an apparent assassination attempt on Trump.

A background check on the name given by officials, Ryan Wesley Routh, revealed that he currently lives in Hawaii and has faced dozens of run-ins with police, stretching back to at least the 1990s.

Routh is a native of North Carolina, where his list of arrests includes simple drug possession, driving without a license, expired inspection and operating a vehicle with no insurance. In addition, the Greensboro News & Record reported in 2002 that Routh was arrested after barricading himself in his roofing company’s office during a three-hour standoff that followed a traffic stop in which he put his hand on a gun before fleeing.

Routh moved to Hawaii in 2017, records show. He has since launched another construction company in Hawaii that builds simple housing structures for homeless people, according to a LinkedIn page that appears to belong to Routh.

“This does not appear to be some random guy with an AK-47 walking outside Trump’s club,” an official said after the Sunday afternoon incident.

News of the incident broke shortly after Trump was safely escorted off of the golf course.

A Secret Service member spotted the would-be gunman while Trump was playing on the course’s fifth hole. Officials say he abandoned an AK-47, a go-pro camera and two backpacks along a chain-link fence that borders the sixth hole of the course.

Routh fled in an SUV after a member of the Secret Service fired on him, but was soon arrested, according to authorities.

Trump’s campaign quickly issued a statement that the 45th president was safe, with Trump following up in a message to supporters that he will “never surrender.”

Fox News’ Lucas Tomlinson confirmed that the Secret Service opened fire after they saw a man lift an AK-47. The suspect took off in a car but was quickly apprehended, authorities said.
