Cheshire (Ct.) Academy wide receiver Teriq Mallory received an offer from West Virginia in January after a stop by campus for a junior day event and held the program in high regard. However, he would announce a commitment to Wake Forest in mid-April and things seemed to come to a standstill with the Mountaineers. But due to the persistence of wide receivers coach Bilal Marshall, Mallory made it back to Morgantown for an official visit during the May 31 weekend and saw enough during that trip to flip his commitment in favor of West Virginia. Mallory is being targeted as a big outside wide receiver option that can stretch the field and go up and get the football. He collected other offers from Maryland, Duke and several more.

Delray Beach (Fla.) Atlantic Community running back Deandre Desinor was a top target for the West Virginia coaching staff from early on in the process. Offensive coordinator Chad Scott served as the lead recruiter and developed a strong bond with the talented running back which proved to be critical. Desinor made multiple visits to West Virginia throughout the process and his comfort level with the program led to him committing to the Mountaineers after his official visit at the beginning of June. Selected West Virginia over an offer list that included Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Miami, Penn State, Texas A&M, UCF and Louisville, among others. A major pick up for the program given his versatile skill set and what he can do with the ball in his hands.

Olney (Md.) Good Counsel offensive lineman Gavin Crawford received a scholarship offer from West Virginia in January of 2023 and the Mountaineers only continued to further develop a bond from that point. Crawford collected a long list of scholarship offers from schools such as Florida, Maryland, UCLA, Tennessee, Georgia, Pittsburgh, Michigan State and Duke but committed to the Mountaineers in large part due to his comfort level with the program and the coaching staff. Crawford was a frequent visitor to Morgantown and developed a close bond with offensive line coach Matt Moore. Slated to play on the interior of the offensive line, Crawford gives the Mountaineers a major piece up front in the 2025 class to join what was already in place. The expectation is that he will enroll early to start his career in Morgantown.

De Forest (Wi.) tight end Jackson Accuardi received an offer from West Virginia in November and things only continued to build from that point between the two. Tight ends coach Blaine Stewart served as the lead recruiter and developed a strong bond that ended up being critical in his commitment. Accuardi collected other offers from Michigan State, Iowa State, Missouri, Louisville, Colorado, Duke, Illinois and Indiana but committed to West Virginia on the day of the spring game. Accuardi is a big bodied tight end that is effective not only as a receiver but a blocker which is a perfect match for what the Mountaineers wanted at the position in this class.

Olney (Md.) Good Counsel offensive lineman Eidan Buchanan grew up following the West Virginia football program due to his family connections to the state. And once the Mountaineers jumped into the mix with a scholarship offer after an impressive performance at the big man camp in the summer of 2023 the program surged up his list. Buchanan narrowed his options down to West Virginia, Rutgers, Kentucky, Wisconsin and Maryland before committing to the Mountaineers. Offensive line coach Matt Moore served as the lead recruiter for Buchanan and that connected proved critical in his commitment. The 6-foot-8 lineman is being slotted as a tackle in the West Virginia offensive scheme and fills a major need for the program.

Huntington (W.Va.) athlete Zah Jackson popped up on the West Virginia radar as a freshman and things only continued to build from there. The in-state native took multiple visits to Morgantown for junior days and camps before things took a big turn when he received a scholarship offer in the summer of 2023. From there, Jackson listed the Mountaineers among his top options and selected the program over a number of other schools including his finalists North Carolina State, Mississippi State and Liberty. A two-way athlete, Jackson could play several different positions in college and gives West Virginia another in-state prospect in the class.

Haverford (Pa.) The Haverford School offensive lineman Thomas Barr received his first scholarship offer from West Virginia in July of 2023 and things only continued to build from that point. Offensive line coach Matt Moore, along with offensive coordinator Chad Scott, served as the lead recruiters for Barr and was able to get him on campus multiple times for visits leading to him committing to the program. Barr has the versatility to play several different positions along the offensive line but will start his career at center.

Mentor (Oh.) quarterback Scotty Fox received an offer from West Virginia in May and from that point forward became a priority for the Mountaineers in their class. The Ohio native took trips to Morgantown on multiple occasions including for a summer camp and for games against Pittsburgh and Cincinnati. Quarterbacks coach Sean Reagan served as the lead recruiter for Fox and developed a strong connection with him which was critical in his decision-making process. After that visit for the Cincinnati game, Fox cast his lot with the Mountaineers giving the program a signal caller which they prioritized on the recruiting trail into the fold early in the process. On top of West Virginia, Fox held offers from Michigan State, Minnesota, Cincinnati, Boston College, Indiana, Connecticut and several others.

Hurricane (W.Va.) wide receiver Tyshawn Dues had long been interested in the West Virginia football program as an in-state prospect but things picked up tremendously when he earned a scholarship offer following an impressive summer camp stop. In that camp Dues was timed at 4.5 in the 40-yard dash and it didn’t take him too long to act on the opportunity. A few months later, Dues informed lead recruiter wide receivers coach Bilal Marshall that he was ready to pull the trigger and become the first commitment in the 2025 class. Dues is being targeted as a wide receiver and was a good start to the class with the Mountaineers becoming the first power five program to offer.

What’s happening with house prices in Charleston, West Virginia in 2026?
Home prices across the U.S. have remained at record highs for years, driven by a limited supply and a persistent homebuilding shortage. More recently, economic uncertainty has kept more homebuyers on the sidelines, but it’s also discouraged home sellers, further limiting new listings and putting upward pressure on prices. Sellers who are in the market often have to offer incentives to attract offers from buyers—many of whom are wary of how much they can afford.
On the bright side, prices have begun to grow more slowly, and Redfin predicts that housing will become more affordable as wages outpace prices. But so far this year, the housing market has remained very slow, leaving buyers and sellers trying to time their next move.

Trip planned to W.Va.
A bus trip and train ride are planned by the North Huntingdon AARP Senior Citizens for June 17-19.
The bus will leave St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church at 9:30 a.m. June 17 and arrive in Elkins, West Virginia, around 4 p.m. Participants will see a dinner show that evening.
A scenic train ride will take place June 18 and 19.
The price is $855 per person for double occupancy and $1,040 for a single room. The price includes two nights’ accommodations, two dinner shows, and two train rides.

Church rummage sale
The Lutheran Church of Our Saviour, 1570 Clay Pike, North Huntingdon, will sponsor a rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 1 and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 2.
Food will be available for purchase. Proceeds benefit the Blessed Bundles outreach ministry.
Art League workshops
The Norwin Art League has opened registration for a series of community workshops scheduled for May. The sessions, held at 305 Main St., cover a range of mediums including paper art, fiber arts and watercolor.
The following workshops are being offered:
3-D Paper Art (preteen/teen): May 2 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. This youth-focused session costs $25 and includes all materials. Prospective students must register by April 30 and contact Sarah at 412-522-5281 to specify their design preference.
Beginner Crochet: May 12 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Designed for ages 10 and up, participants will learn to create an amigurumi octopus keychain. The fee is $15 for members and $20 for nonmembers. The deadline to register is May 11. For questions, contact Heather at 724-433-4869.
Ink and Wash Watercolor: May 16 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. This adult workshop (18+) explores the combination of ink and watercolor techniques. No prior experience is required. Boy Scouts selling mulch
Boy Scout Troop 284 is accepting orders for its annual mulch sale through April 26.
The mulch is priced at $5 per bag, or $110 for 25 bags. The troop provides free delivery to customers located within the 15642 ZIP code and a surrounding 5-mile radius.
Deliveries are scheduled for May 1–3. In the event of a rainout, the backup dates are May 8–9.

Help with heating bills
The Low Income Home Energy Assistance program (LIHEAP) provides cash grants to help Pennsylvania families pay their heating bills.
Through May 8, low-income residents who need assistance paying for their heating bill can apply for a one-time grant of $200 to $1,000 that will be applied directly to their utility provider.
Funding is limited and distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

To qualify for LIHEAP in Pennsylvania, you must meet income requirements, which are set based on household size. Renters and homeowners are eligible for benefits. You do not need to be on another public assistance program or have unpaid heating bills to qualify.
If you are experiencing an emergency related to your household’s heat, such as broken equipment, or facing utility service termination, you might be eligible to receive additional funds through a crisis grant.

Homeowner repairs
The nonprofit Carpenter’s Apprentice, a group of volunteers from Norwin and Harrison City area churches who help make repairs to homes of residents in need, is planning a spring fix-up weekend May 15-17.
The organization is seeking volunteers to donate their time and talent toward projects for that weekend. It is also looking for community members, churches and pastors to refer homeowners in need.
Anyone referred to the organization for assistance will be contacted, and a site surveyor will be assigned to speak with the homeowner to determine their needs and decide if the project fits the volunteers’ capabilities. A financial needs assessment also will be conducted by the site surveyor.
Those living within 30 minutes of the Norwin School District — North Huntingdon, Irwin and North Irwin — are eligible to be considered for a home repair.
The Carpenter’s Apprentice was created in 2008 to provide essential repairs to homes to ensure residents can live in a safe and secure environment.
Those who want to volunteer, apply for assistance or refer someone in need can visit the organization’s website at thecarpentersapprentice.org.
State police academy
The Pennsylvania State Police is now accepting applications for its 2026 Law and Leadership Academy – Southwest Location. The application period runs through May 1.
The free program is designed for residents or students in Southwest Pennsylvania, ages 18 and older, who have a high school diploma or GED and are seeking a career in law enforcement. Modeled after professional police academies, the curriculum includes instruction on criminal investigations, traffic laws and police resources, alongside paramilitary training in physical fitness, swimming and marching.
The academy runs from May 11 through Aug. 5. Classes are held:
Mondays: 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Wednesdays: 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Saturdays: Two dates (tentative)
The program aims to foster self-discipline and teamwork while giving participants a firsthand look at the cadet experience.

HAMLIN, WV (WVNS) – Troopers with the West Virginia State Police Hamlin Detachment are investigating an alleged robbery.
According to a press release from the West Virginia State Police, Troopers responded to reports of a robbery and arrived at the 7-11 gas station in Hamlin to investigate.
The press release stated that during the investigation, Troopers talked to the assistant manager of the 7-11 gas station, who claimed that when they were trying to deposit money at City National Bank, someone took a hold of them from behind and threw them down to the floor. The suspect fled on foot after taking U.S. money out of the 7-11 banker’s bag. Although not confirmed, the suspect is thought to be male and was wearing dark khaki pants.
This matter is still under investigation.
