D.C. police officers on an anti-crime patrol shot and wounded a man in the Anacostia area of Southeast Washington on Friday evening after he ran from them and then opened fire, the city’s police chief said.

The man was hit around 6:20 p.m. in the 1400 block of Bangor Street SE and taken to a hospital in a condition that did not appear to be life-threatening, said Police Chief Pamela A. Smith.

A gun was found at the scene, Smith said.

As she described the incident in a briefing, officers had been assigned to the area in what was described as a “proactive” effort to suppress violent crime.

They came upon someone in an apartment courtyard whom they tried to stop, but he ran from them, Smith said. It was not clear why they had tried to accost the man.

In the course of the pursuit, he went into an alley, drew a handgun, fired “multiple times” and officers returned the gunfire, according to Smith.

The man was struck. While awaiting rescue personnel, the officers provided first aid, police said.

The 1400 block of Bangor Street SE is a residential block that includes rows of one- and two-family houses just north of Morris Road. The area also includes garden-style apartments.
