As the body of former President Jimmy Carter lies in state in the Capitol Rotunda, several Georgians have traveled to the nation’s capital to pay their respects.
WASHINGTON – In a poignant moment for the nation, former President Jimmy Carter has made his final journey to Washington, D.C., where he is lying in state at the U.S. Capitol ahead of his National Funeral Service on Thursday. Despite the freezing temperatures and snow, mourners from across the country have flocked to the capital to pay their respects.

Among those braving the elements was Jill Welch from Brookhaven in Georgia, who expressed her gratitude for making it to the Capitol despite the weather challenges. Having volunteered at the Carter Center in Atlanta, Welch felt it was important to see the former president’s casket in D.C. before attending his burial in Plains.
“President and Mrs. Carter meant a lot to me,” Welch shared. “They’ve changed this world.”

Patrice Earnest from Smyrna also traveled to the nation’s capital, choosing to honor Carter on a national stage rather than at the Carter Center. She emphasized the significance of witnessing the respect and impact Carter had on a national level, sharing a personal connection through her family’s invitation to his inauguration nearly 50 years ago.
“I knew that it would mean a lot for me, our family, just to be here,” Earnest said.
Jimmy Carter: Capitol Rotunda service
Former President Jimmy Carter arrived in the Capitol Rotunda to lie in state. A brief service was held with dignitaries, representatives, senators, and family.
As thousands continue to arrive at the Capitol, the shared sentiment among the visitors is a desire to honor the legacy of a globetrotting humanitarian who left a lasting mark on the world.
“Just a time to reflect on all the good works that he and Mrs. Carter did,” Welch said.
The Capitol is expected to see a steady stream of visitors until Thursday morning, as the nation bids farewell to a beloved former president.

WASHINGTON (7News) — On Saturday evening, Metropolitan Police Department’s Seventh District officers responded to a fatal crash on I-295 northbound near Exit 1 for Laboratory Road, Southwest.
The incident occurred around 7:50 p.m. when a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle, police said.

Prince George’s County police officers were already on the scene when the MPD officers arrived.
The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have not yet released the victim’s age or gender.

The driver of the vehicle involved in the collision remained at the scene.

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — Smoke was seen billowing in a Northwest D.C. neighborhood Sunday afternoon after a row house caught fire, prompting a large presence of first responders.
In a post on the X platform just after 12:40 p.m., the DC Fire and EMS Department said crews were responding to a box alarm at a row house in the 2100 block of 13th Street NW. There, firefighters found smoke coming from the top of three attached row houses.
Crews determined that the flames were coming from the attic of one of the three-story row homes, but that it was at risk of spreading to both adjacent homes. As a result, firefighters upgraded the response to a two-alarm fire, aggressively attacking the flames from the inside.
Officials noted that firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze, which involved the entire attic, and that it only spread to one of the attached row houses.
No injuries were reported; however, officials were working to learn how many people would be displaced.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
