VIRGINIA — For some Virginia families, getting up before dawn to head to the stores is as much a part of their Thanksgiving weekend traditions as turkey and potatoes, and 2023 is shaping up to reach record spending levels this year.

Luckily, major retailers in Virginia such as Walmart, Target, Best Buy, Macy’s and GameStop are all opening to celebrate the grandest holiday of American consumerism.

Despite inflation concerns this year, the National Retail Federation projected that holiday spending is expected to reach record levels during November and December — and will grow between 3 percent and 4 percent over 2022, to between $957.3 billion and $966.6 billion.

Consumers plan to spend about $875 during this holiday season — $620 on gifts, and another $255 on things like decorations, candy and food. That’s about $42 more than 2022.

“Consumers remain in the driver’s seat, and are resilient despite headwinds of inflation, higher gas prices, stringent credit conditions and elevated interest rates,” federation Chief Economist Jack Kleinhenz said in a news release. “We expect spending to continue through the end of the year on a range of items and experiences, but at a slower pace. Solid job and wage growth will be contributing factors this holiday season, and consumers will be looking for deals and discounts to stretch their dollars.”
