Mooney says inflation still having impact on West Virginians – WV MetroNews
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia Second District Congressman Alex Mooney says inflation is still hurting West Virginians.
“The average American, because of inflation and Bidenomics, is paying $11,400 per year,” Mooney said last week. “Almost $1,000 a month has been taken out of every American’s pocket because of out-of-control inflation.”
Mooney said the $5 trillion added to the national debt during the Biden administration is proof the administration is not concerned about fiscal responsibility. He called his opponent in the May primary in the race for senate, incumbent West Virginia Governor Jim Justice, a tax and spend liberal.
“Governor Jim Justice attacked me because I wouldn’t vote for Joe Biden’s $1.3 trillion non-infrastructure bill, which added to our debt,” Mooney said. “Look, I’m for a lot of things we spend money on; we just have to be able to pay for what we spend.”
Reports indicate migrant encounters at the southern border have topped 200,000 this month, and that number includes more than 10,000 contacts every day. Here at home, Mooney recounted a tour of the Wheeling Police Department, where officials displayed a quantity of fentanyl they said was manufactured in China and shipped through Mexico to the city.
Mooney said Biden has done nothing to stem the flow, but he has a piece of legislation prepared to take action against the Mexican government to stop the surge.
“Punish Mexico right now because they are sending drugs like crazy, including fentanyl, across the border, and they claim it’s not their problem, it’s our problem,” Mooney said. “I have a bill right now to shut off all aid to Mexico until they certify to the President that there are no more drugs coming across the border, and they’ve mocked us for that.”
Mooney likened this campaign to the run against David McKinley for the 2nd District Congressional seat when he stuck to the issues while he was being attacked. He wants an honest conversation with West Virginia voters about his voting record and positions on the issues.
“Obviously, they’re very scared I will win, or they wouldn’t spend $1 million attacking me,” Mooney said. “So, this race is on, and I’m going to make the choice very clear to West Virginia voters between a proven conservative in Alex Mooney and a liberal in Jim Justice.”
Most polls have showed Justice with a commanding lead over Mooney in the race for the GOP nomination to the U.S. Senate.
The attack ads have tried to pin Mooney as a Washington, D.C., insider who only moved to the Mountain State to further his political career. He rejects the notion based on the historic support from voters during five previous campaigns.
“I’m proud of my choice. I used to live in Western Maryland, but I chose to leave and move to West Virginia,” Mooney said. “I love West Virginia; the good voters have elected me five times to represent them in Congress in West Virginia; I represent half of the state.”
