A former West Virginia resident faces multiple charges based on his activities at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

Bart Gore, a former Logan County resident now living in east Tennessee, was charged this Dec. 7 with five counts accusing him of disorderly conduct and entering restricted areas where Congress and the vice president were working. He made an initial appearance last week in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

The complaint against Gore indicates he was identified to federal investigators by a confidential informant. Investigators also matched his cell phone to service records in line with an interior area of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

Law enforcement officials looked up his social media accounts and found a post from early January, 2021, that expressed desire to gather with members of the Proud Boys militia group: “Headed to D.C. on Tuesday. Looking for some fellow WV Proud Boys or East TN Proud Boys to meet. Time and place??”

Federal investigators reviewed video from the Capitol that day and identified images that appeared to be Gore both outside and inside.

The federal complaint against Gore cites several examples from his social media posts following the Nov. 3, 2020, election and on through the Jan. 6 time frame.

In a public post that Nov. 4, he commented on the election results by saying “I know violence is a last resort but controlled violence is very effective. I believe in our country and I believe in all of you that have a spine. There’s plenty of us out here. We just have to form a union of believers. It’s time for action!!”

That December, he wrote to a Facebook friend about his plans to go to the Capitol on Jan 6: “I’d love to be the one to capture Obama or Hillary. I’d strip them naked and beat them with a belt and switch. Then I’d rest and beat them some more.”

In early January of that year, he messaged that same friend and said he would be “bringing and AR with me,” an apparent reference to a semiautomatic weapon. He also said he would bring a baseball bat, wasp spray and a mouth guard “so I don’t get my teeth knocked out.”

Following the events of that Jan. 6, Gore sent private messages to the Facebook friend to say he would like to go back.

“I wasn’t satisfied,” he wrote. Then apparently referring to then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, he continued, “I would’ve been satisfied if they’d brought Nancy’s head out on a stick.”
