People who receive food stamps in the Old Dominion will begin to see their benefits for the month of August in four days.

The Virginia Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, which provides funds to help low-income individuals pay for groceries, hands out its benefits from the first through the seventh of every month. This schedule means the first round of benefits for next month will go out beginning on Tuesday.

Food stamps are distributed via an electronic benefit transfer card and are sent out on different days depending on someone’s case number.

Beneficiaries with a case number that ends in 0-3 will see their benefits on Tuesday, those with a case number ending in 4-5 will see their benefits on Friday, and those with a case number ending in 6-9 will see their benefits on Aug. 7.

Virginians using SNAP benefits may purchase “food or food products meant to be eaten by people,” along with seeds and food-producing plants, among other things. Food stamps may not be used for non-food items, alcohol, tobacco, medicines, gardening items, cleaning or paper products, pet food, or prepared hot foods.
