Duke Street over I-395 Bridge Rehabilitation Complete in Alexandria

Bridge has upgraded westbound shared-use path and wider eastbound sidewalk

ALEXANDRIA – The Duke Street (Route 236) over I-395 bridge rehabilitation project is complete ahead of schedule, improving safety and pedestrian mobility, giving drivers a smoother ride and extending the overall life of the bridge that carries about 47,000 vehicles a day, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

The project included:

  • Replacing the concrete bridge deck and beams
  • Upgrading the westbound sidewalk to a shared-use path
  • Widening the eastbound sidewalk

In August 2022, the Duke Street concrete roadway was repaired just east and west of I-395.

Construction began in July 2021 on the $16.4 million project, which was financed with federal and state funding including State of Good Repair funds used for bridges and pavement. The construction contractor was Martins Construction of Falls Church.
