Heavy toxic metals could be in the rice you’re about to buy at the grocery store.
Healthy Babies, Bright Futures, a nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C., that seeks to reduce babies’ exposure to toxic chemicals, revealed that arsenic was found in 100% of the 145 rice samples purchased from stores throughout the United States.
“We found four toxic heavy metals in rice – arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury,” according to the new report.

“While each contaminant has different health effects, they can contribute to serious risks like cancer, developmental harm including IQ loss and accumulation in the body over time,” the report said.
The study included 10 forms of grain and more than 100 brands from stores in 20 different U.S. metropolitan areas, from Seattle to Los Angeles and New York to Miami.

“Arsenic was found at the highest levels, with cadmium next,” the report stated.
One in four rice samples exceeded the federal limit set for arsenic in infant rice cereal, according to the study.
“No such limit exists for rice itself – the bags and boxes of rice served at family meals – despite it being widely consumed by infants and toddlers,” the report said. “Additionally, cadmium was found in all but one sample, with some showing elevated levels.”

Long-term exposure to arsenic from food and water can cause cancer and skin lesions, according to the World Health Organization.
Michael Klein, a spokesperson for the USA Rice Federation, based in Arlington, Virginia, told Fox News Digital that American-grown rice “contains the lowest levels of inorganic arsenic in the world.”
“America’s rice farmers and rice companies are fully committed to providing wholesome, high-quality and nutritious food.”
“America’s rice farmers and rice companies are fully committed to providing wholesome, high-quality and nutritious food,” Klein said.
“We know that arsenic in food is alarming for many consumers and that you may have questions,” he said. “And while we do not agree that there is a public health safety issue as a result of trace amounts of arsenic in rice, we will continue to work with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to ensure the U.S. rice supply meets any threshold established.”
Brown rice grown in the southeast or labeled “grown in the USA” had the highest average levels of heavy metals, data from the study showed.

White rice grown in the southeast showed consistently higher levels of heavy metals, primarily arsenic, than rice grown in California, the data revealed.
Thai jasmine rice and Indian basmati rice, as well as rice grown in California, generally contained lower heavy metal levels than other varieties tested.

However, basmati rice from India and arborio rice from Italy had the highest average cadmium levels, per the study.
Lead and mercury were found at the lowest levels, the study showed.

“The U.S. rice industry does not dispute that there is arsenic in rice,” Klein said. “Arsenic is found in virtually everything that grows in the ground.”
However, Klein called the data misleading — adding that every example highlighted in the new report is below the recommended guidance of the FDA.
Information provided by the FDA on its website specifies the permitted levels of heavy metals found in food.

As part of its “closer to zero” guidance, the FDA has a higher standard for processed foods intended for babies and young children.
“We hope families come away with simple, practical steps they can take right now to reduce exposure – like cooking rice in extra water and draining it, swapping in other grains like quinoa or barley and choosing lower-arsenic rice types such as California-grown, Thai jasmine or Indian basmati,” Healthy Babies, Bright Futures research director Jane Houlihan told Fox News Digital.

“We’re also urging the FDA to set enforceable limits on arsenic in all rice, not just baby cereal, to better protect children and families across the country.”

Maxx Yehl Shines in Return as No. 18 West Virginia Blanks Kansas State
The No. 18 West Virginia Mountaineers (29-12, 14-8) handled the Kansas State Wildcats (26-20, 9-13) Friday night 7-0 in the first of a three-game series.
West Virginia starting pitcher Maxx Yehl returned to the starting weekend rotation after missing last week with a shoulder injury and made his first game one start of the season. The redshirt junior threw five scoreless innings and recorded eight strikeouts on the night to collect his sixth win of the season.
Yeh received early run support after the Mountaineers put up a pair of runs in the first three innings. In the bottom of the first, sophomore Gavin Kelly worked out of an 0-2 count to receive a one-out walk before senior Paul Schoenfeld sliced an RBI double into the left centerfield gap for the early 1-0 advantage.
In the third, sophomore Matt Ineich hit a ground ball past the outreached glove of redshirt freshman first baseman Chandler Murray for a leadoff single and Kelly followed with a single to right field and moved to second on the throw to third before senior Sean Smith delivered a one-out RBI sacrifice fly to centerfield for a 2-0 lead.
West Virginia tacked on a run in the fifth when Ineich was issued a leadoff walk, Schoenfeld accompanied Ineich on the base pads with a one-out single to right field, Smith loaded the bases on a check swing, and senior Matthew Graveline hit a sac fly to centerfield to extend the lead, 3-0.
The Mountaineers added insurance runs in the seventh. Schoenfeld captured the momentum with a one-out single back up the middle and Smith received a four-pitch walk before junior Armani Guzman was beaned to load the bases. Then, with a full count, Brodie Kresser beat the shift, rolling a two-RBI single through the right side. Guzman and Kresser pulled off a double steal to stratch another run across and senior Brock Wills capped the inning with a line drive to left field for an RBI single for a four-run seventh inning.
After Yehl’s strong start, graduate senior Ian Korn took the ball and kept the Wildcats off the board, allowing one hit in four innings and registered a pair of strikeouts as the Mountaineers captured the series opener with a 7-0 decision.
West Virginia looks to clinch the series in game two Saturday afternoon. The first pitch is set for 4:00 p.m. EST and the action will stream on ESPN+.

Max Verstappen: Red Bull Miami updates have “almost halved” gap to F1 frontrunners
Max Verstappen believes that Red Bull’s wealth of upgrades for the Miami Grand Prix have so far “almost halved” the gap to the leaders, but still sees weaknesses in this year’s RB22 to work on.
Red Bull caught the eye with its own interpretation of the “Macarena” rear wing; when the active aero system is turned on for straight mode, the wing rotates around 180 degrees. Although Ferrari was first seen in testing with the device, Red Bull was adamant that it had its own version in development long before it was ever seen in the flesh.
The team also has new sidepods, increasing their width from side-to-side to incorporate a waterslide-like ramp along the top surface to offer more direction to the airflow passing over the top.
To satisfy the reprofiled sidepods, the engine cover and the floor have been reworked. Furthermore, the exhaust also appears to have a flap at the exit port to work in a similar way to Ferrari’s exhaust winglet seen earlier this season.
Giving his first verdict of the updated RB22, Verstappen felt that the car was “more together”; he took it to fifth on the grid for the Miami sprint race, just under 0.6s off Lando Norris’ pole time. By comparison, Verstappen missed the Q3 cut-off in Suzuka, having been 1.2s slower than Kimi Antonelli in Q2.
“It feels more together. Of course, there are still things that we are working on. But it’s been a really positive step for us. Last few races we were over a second behind. I would say we have almost halved that gap now,” Verstappen said.

“So that’s positive. We’re still very weak in the first sector, which is mainly high speed. So we know that we need to work on that.
“But, yeah, the rest seemed all a bit more together. So a bit happier with that. At least it seems like we have cleared a little bit the midfield.
“It feels a bit more normal. It’s still not where I want it to be, obviously. But it’s at least allowing me to trust it a bit more. And I can basically take a bit more lap time out of it.”
Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies told Sky Germany that the car’s new fittings were “in the right direction”, and that both drivers had agreed that the RB22 was now more consistent.
Although many of the updates had been targeted at aero load, Red Bull’s notes in the usual FIA technical document circulated to media stated that increasing flow stability was also key to its developments.
“It’s been a very intense five-week period. We know we had quite a lot of issues to get to the bottom of and I think that’s what the guys have done,” Mekies said.
“We knew coming here, especially after having run in Silverstone, [that] we had not solved everything. But pretty much we had the confirmation that we are going to the right direction.

“It’s a closest gap to pole that we ever had this year. So, you know, don’t get me wrong. The competition is extremely strong. Everybody is progressing.
“But also from the drivers comments from Max, for me, that it’s it’s something a bit more consistent, so definitely the direction of travel is better.”
Although Hadjar was also pleased to have a more competitive car, he was nonetheless puzzled by his one-second gap to Verstappen after sprint qualifying and could offer no explanation to the deficit.
“I got through SQ3, which is a start. But then to be a second off, I don’t know why.
I’ve never been more than a tenth off so far this year when it mattered,” Hadjar said. “So, yeah, I don’t know what’s going on.”
