Texas Republican doubles down on attack on Judy Chu
Rep. Lance Gooden (R-Texas) is doubling down on his assault on Rep. Judy Chu’s (D-Calf.) heritage regardless of receiving bipartisan pushback, arguing that it’s not “xenophobic” to query the congresswoman’s loyalty to her nation.
In a tweet on Sunday, Gooden pointed to Chu’s vote in opposition to a decision creating the China choose committee, and he cited reporting from The Every day Caller that mentioned Chu — the primary Chinese language American congresswoman — had been appointed to an honorary place in a corporation with ties to the Communist Celebration of China.
“Democrat @RepJudyChu: Voted AGAINST committee to research China. Named ‘Honorary Chairwoman’ of CCP entrance group. It’s not ‘xenophobic’ to query the place her loyalty lies,” Gooden wrote on Twitter.
The Hill reached out to Chu for remark. She defended herself in opposition to Gooden’s earlier remarks, calling his feedback “completely outrageous” and “racist.”
The political firestorm started final week when Gooden prompt that Chu mustn’t obtain entry to delicate labeled supplies as a result of she defended Dominic Ng, who President Biden appointed to guide U.S. commerce pursuits in Asia. Ng has been accused of getting ties to the Chinese language Communist Celebration, prompting a bunch of Home GOP lawmakers to ask the FBI to research the appointee.
“I query her both loyalty or competence,” Gooden mentioned of Chu throughout an interview on Fox Information. “If she doesn’t understand what’s happening then she’s completely out of contact with one in all her core constituencies.”
Lawmakers on either side of the aisle condemned the remarks.
“Let me say we must always not query anyone’s loyalty to the USA. I feel that’s out of bounds. It’s past the pale,” Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-Wis.), the chairman of the China choose committee, advised CBS’s “Face The Nation” on Sunday.
“Completely, we shouldn’t query anyone’s loyalty,” he added.
Throughout that very same interview, Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (Sick.), the highest Democrat on the panel, known as Gooden’s feedback “offensive.”
In a separate assertion, Home Minority Chief Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) mentioned the Texas Republican’s “slanderous accusations” in opposition to Chu was “harmful, unconscionable and xenophobic.”
