The Heisman Trophy is an award that outside of a few anomalies is typically hoisted by a quarterback.
Since 2000, there have only been three non-quarterbacks to win the award and oddly enough they all hailed from Alabama. You have to go back to 1998 for the last time a Longhorn won the award, and back to the days of Colt McCoy to find the last time they even produced a finalist.
According to Max Chadwick of PFF, Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers will have a shot to be a finalist and potentially even win the award in 2023.
PFF released their college football award predictions for the 2023 season, and the former five-star was one of the four finalists for the Heisman. He was mentioned alongside USC’s Caleb Williams and Michigan’s Blake Corum, but the trio came up short to Florida State’s Jordan Travis.
The case for Ewers is quite simple, he has a massive arm and has arguably the best receiver corps in the country to throw to. On top of that, Steve Sarkisian is one of the best offensive minds in the country.
If Ewers can improve his accuracy and ability to throw to the deep ball, he could very well put up video game numbers.
