East Tennessee educator is the 2024 National Teacher of the Year
Rogersville City School teacher Missy Testerman was named National Teacher of the Year on April 3, 2024. She plans to encourage and uplift educators.
Tennessee ranked 44th in the nation for average teacher pay in the 2022-23 school year.
An analysis of teacher salaries across all 50 states and Washington D.C. from the National Education Association showed teachers earned an average of $69,544 in 2022-23. The association is the largest teacher’s union in the nation.
While Tennessee remains low on the list, it enacted a law in 2023 to raise the minimum salary for all teachers to $50,000 by 2026. The previous minimum was set at $35,000. However, data is not yet available for the 2023-24 and 2024-25 school years.
As of the 2022-23 school year, the average teacher salary in Tennessee sat just below $58,000, according to data from the Tennessee Department of Education. Teachers at Oak Ridge Schools in Anderson County topped the list with an average $71,510 salary that year. Grundy County Schools ranked last with an average of $48,077.
